PGA Handles the
Wind-and the MGA
The wind was howling at Windsong
Farm May 31, but the PGA was
able to handle it enough to beat
the MGA in the annual MGA-PGA
Cup Matches.
Legendary pro Bill Israelson,
winner of virtually every major
state championship, was 2-underpar
for 14 holes as he defeated
the reigning State Senior Amateur
champion, Leif Carlson, 6 and 5 in
a singles match. He also combined
with Matt Vandelac to beat Carlson
and State Senior Publinks champ
Don Howe 5 and 4 in a four-ball
match. Vandelac also won his singles
match, 3 and 2, over Howe.
Those early victories set the tone
for the day, and the PGA ended up
winning 27 1/2 to 12 1/2.
" Technology is amazing, " says Israelson,
who bought a driver before
the match that allowed the historic
hooker of the ball to hit a slight cut.
" With the clubs they make now, you
can buy a driver that goes left to
right. That's what I did. "
" He was sensational, " says John
Paulson, who refereed the matches
for Israelson's group. " He drove
it straight and long, and he hit his
irons so close he didn't really need
to make any putts. It was a fabulous
round of golf. "
Jeff Sorenson, Craig Brischke
and Scott McDonald all finished
at 1 under-an impressive score,
considering that the breeze was a
consistent 20 miles per hour and
gusted to 30 or 35 miles per hour.
With the victory, the state's top
pros expanded their lead over the
state's best amateurs to 26-7-2.
