said after reaching the semifi nals. " You'd
think they'd at least have applauded a
little when I won. "
Stranahan's role as the villain was soDorothy

lidifi
ed when he met unheralded Sam
Urzetta in the fi nals. The Minneapolis Star
headline read: " Millionaire's son vs. janitor's
son. " Guess where the crowd's sentiments
were.
With a gallery of 3,000 urging him on,
Urzetta won the championship on the
39th hole, the longest title match in U.S.
Amateur history. Urzetta parred the third
hole, while Stranahan sliced his drive out
of bounds and failed to make his bogey
putt.
A year later, the Town & Country Club
of St. Paul hosted the 1951 U.S. Women's
Amateur Championship, won by Dorothy
Kirby of Georgia. Kirby had been a teenage
sensation when she won the 1933 Georgia
State Amateur championship, but had
played in 16 straight U.S. Women's Amateurs
without winning the title until she
defeated Claire Doran of Cleveland 2&1
in the 1951 fi nals at a rain-soaked T&C.
The fi eld included 19-year-old Bev
Gammon (later Vanstrum) of the University
of Minnesota, who lost her fi rstround
match to former Minnesotan Dot
Kielty; Bea Altmeyer of the Lafayette Club,
who made it to the quarter-fi nals; Mary
Lena Faulk, who would win the 1953 U.S.
Women's Amateur and 10 LPGA tournaments;
and Barbara Romack, who won
the 1954 U.S. Women's Amateur and also
won on the LPGA Tour.
The PGA Championship, still using the
match-play formula, returned to Keller
in 1954 and was won by Chick Harbert, a
Detroit resident who had won the 1942 St.
Paul Open. By then he was 39 years old and
had already lost twice in the PGA fi nals.
That tournament's marquee showdown
was between the popular Sam Snead and
the brash Tommy Bolt, who won the following
year's St. Paul Open and the 1958
U.S. Open. Bolt chose to play more slowly
than the quick-paced Snead, creating tension
in the match that persisted until Bolt
won on the third extra hole.

tournament came down to a back-nine
battle among Kathy Cornelius, Barbara
McIntire, Marlene Bauer Hagge and Minnesota
favorite Patty Berg. McIntire made
up eight strokes in the fi nal round, playing
the last three holes in birdie 3, par 3 and
eagle 3. Finishing ahead of the leaders,
her 72-hole score of 302 was the number
