ocated on what was once an expanse of northern tall-grass
prairie, the town of Marshall, pop. 13,680, is situated about
150 miles west of the Twin Cities in an area designated as
the beginning of the Redwood River fl ood plain-which explains
the area's history of epic fl oods dating from 1875.
Golf has been played in Marshall since the early 1940s, when
the nine-hole Marshall Golf Club was established. Marshall GC is
home to a few notable golfers, including Nancy Harris Blanchard,
an eight-time state golf champion and the sister of U.S. Amateur
champ John Harris. She's also a former University of Minnesota
women's golf coach with a Big Ten title (1989) and Conference
Coach of the Year honor to her credit. Galen Skramstad- " a man
who lived and died for golf, " according to Marshall GC president
Eric Eben-also made Marshall his home course. He won the club
championship no less than 16 times. An annual golf tournament
at the course now bears the Skramstad name in his honor.

Further afi eld is the Tracy Country Club, home to MGA member
Dr. Jack Von Bokern. According to a story that appeared in
the Headlight Herald, Von Bokern has been toiling happily on
that course, playing in the same foursome with three fellow 90somethings
for such a long time that none of the golfers can recall
when the tradition started.
Among the other courses in the Marshall area are small-town
gems like Slayton CC, Pipestone CC, The Crossings, Granite Run
GC, Savannah Oaks Golf Course, Hendricks GC and Cottonwood
CC, in addition to the courses illustrated on these pages.
There are 144 reasons (in the form of golf holes) to fi ll up the
gas tank and make the road trip-and if your travel plans happen
to have you passing through Pipestone in late July, make
time to see the Song of Hiawatha Pageant at the nearby Pipestone
National Monument.
