Setting aside time to play golf is no different
than many other popular family
activities. A trip to the ballpark can take
the larger part of an afternoon or evening.
Camping, fishing and boating require no
less time than it takes to get nine holes
in-and in many cases take the better
part of a day, or two days, if the activity
includes a trip out of town.
Yet, we never hear of these family activities
being labeled as the time suck that
golf allegedly is.
" Who lives in Lakeville? " posits Tom
Smith, owner and operator of Brackett's
Crossing Country Club in Lakeville.
" Younger families do. We mirror the demographics
of the community. "
Brackett's, a private 18-hole golf facility,
offers family activities such as a pool,
tennis courts and dining, which are a
primary draw for many new members,
Smith says.
The fact is golfers choose to spend time
chasing a little white ball into a faraway
hole more or less in the same ways that
bikers bike and campers camp. There is no
evidence to suggest that the relative time
it takes to play one hole or nine holes has
changed much since the game was introduced
to Minnesota nearly 120 years ago.
Golf Is Too Hard
The indictment that golf is too hard is
perhaps the most misleading of the three
reasons why the game is suffering its great
decline.
" The only thing where golf shoots itself
in the foot is in telling people how
difficult the game is, " says Turnbull, who
doesn't accept the precept that golf is " inherently
hard. "
But some voices in the business believe
it is, including prominent names like Mark
King, CEO of TailorMade Golf, and Barney
Adams, the founder of Adams Golf.
