" For the last 15 years, advances in conforming
club and ball technologies have
made it easier to play... So we've already
had a 15-year experiment on this makeit-easier

results? Participation has not gone up. So
we're not going to dumb it down, " Pennington
writes, quoting Rugge. " You know
the easiest way to get the ball in the middle
of the fairway? Walk down there and place
it with your hand. Who are you kidding? "
Allowing non-conforming equipment,
introducing larger cup sizes and sanctioning
mulligans are just a few of the ideas
thrown about by the " golf lite " movement.
An alternative to golf, some say, is what's
needed to attract new players. Something
has to be done, they insist, to address the
dramatic slide in golfer participation (the

But does the golf lite logic hold up
when we remember that new golfers, especially
beginners, make their own rules
according to their needs and skills? Few
neophyte golfers are familiar with the golf
rules book, and playing the game is a classic
example of learning as you go.
In the end, most game-changing initiatives
are contrary to golf's defining spirit.
" Playing your ball as it lies and the golf
course as you find it are two of the basic
principles of the game, " Ryan states.
Of course, not all golfers play to compete.
Some play for the joy of hitting the
ball flush and seeing it fly true. Some play
for the camaraderie. Some play for the
enjoyment of the outdoors. If you ask
an avid golfer why he or she is attracted
to the game, the response is apt to echo
George Mallory and his reason for summiting
Mount Everest: Because it's there.
