The 3M Championship has raised $20
million in 20 years of golf and giving.

ince 1993, the 3M Championship
(formerly called
the Burnett Senior Classic)
has provided great
golf for Minnesota's golfloving
public. But in the
event's 20-year history, it has provided a whole
lot more as well. The 3M Championship has
donated $20 million to local hospitals-and the giving will continue,
as the 2013 tournament rolls into the TPC of the Twin
Cities in Blaine July 29-August 4.
" We never thought of [reaching $20 million] when we started
the tournament in 1993, but as we got into it more, it did become
a goal of ours to hit a number, " says Hollis Cavner, the
tournament's founder and director. " Especially the last four or
five years. As we got closer and it looked like we could make it,
it became fun to try. "
Cavner says that no other event on the Champions Tour is
able to match those figures. The next closest
of any event that has been on the tour
for the same amount of time is about $6 or
$7 million less. " That makes us feel pretty
good, " he says.
Cavner says golf-crazy Minnesota has
contributed to the success the event has had. Even during a dip
in attendance in the middle of the 2000s, when the infusion of
new players to the tour wasn't as great, the 3M Championship
continued to succeed.
" The corporate support never dropped off, " he says. " And
as new players came on tour, the crowds really started to pick
back up again. They've continued to grow every year-35,000
to 40,000 per day on weekends. We're very happy with our attendance. "
Cavner
credits the strong sponsorship, his tournament staff
and the more than 1,600 volunteers who help put on the tournament
for making it possible to reach their goal.
