T
he Iron Range has the " It "
factor when it comes to golf
destinations within Minnesota.
And by " It, " we mean
excellent golf courses that consistently
receive accolades and a plethora of
unique non-golf diversions.
Giants Ridge Golf & Ski Resort,
part of the Troon Golf family, delivers
the highly lauded Quarry and Legend
courses. Each has earned numerous
" best " recognitions from publications
such as Golf Digest, Golfweek and Golf
Magazine, and both are known for their
playability. The Quarry's elevated tees
are a popular feature, as is its junior
program and the resort's 37th-hole
special.
Just up the road at Fortune Bay, The
Wilderness (like The Quarry and The
Legend) was designed by Jeffrey Brauer.
The Wilderness (which received a
" best " nod from Golf Digest and Golfweek)
has developed a strong reputation
for hosting golf groups.
Three nines on this tour are each
worth playing twice. Ely Golf Course
(see sidebar) will enhance any visit
to the Iron Range, with its placement
on the edge of the Boundary Waters
Canoe Area Wilderness. Hoyt Lakes is
also an attractive, woodsy nine with
views of the Partridge River-but it
doesn't come into play. And Eshquaguma
Country Club, a par 36 with multiple
accepted spellings, means " the last
water " in Ojibwe. Initially a three-holer,
the nine never gets too far away from
the lovely lake of the same name.
Mesaba Country Club in Hibbing
(noted by Golf Digest) pairs up with
Virginia's muni for a great 36-hole option.
Mesaba's 18 is adorned with hefty
stands of aspen, birch and white pine,
and its course/slope rating of 72.7/126
from the blue is substantive. Virginia
Golf Course is a par-71 18 rated at
70/123 from the blues. Mesaba opened
in 1921 and Virginia in 1936, and each
track has its own provenance.
A fi nal important note: the Whistling
Bird Restaurant in Gilbert has
reopened, and the new owners are upholding
the American and Caribbean
jerk menu tradition.
