ince its inception in 1962, Hazeltine
National Golf Club's mission has been
" to build and maintain a golf course
suitable for the conduct of national
championships. " As the only Minnesota
course to have hosted 10 national
championships, including four majors, it has done
just that. Throw in a couple PGA Championships,
and there remained only one plum event left to
pluck-the Ryder Cup Matches, which are coming
to the Chaska course in 2016.
So what does it mean to have the biggest event in
golf coming to your home course?
" For me, to be at a club that is hosting the Ryder
Cup will be the culmination of my golf life, " Hazeltine's
reigning Men's Senior Champion Mark Knutson
says. " That will be really cool. It's at my home
course. It doesn't get any better than that! "
To paraphrase Anchorman's Ron Burgundy: It's
kind of a big deal. That's why since 2002, when HaMINNESOTAGOLFER
Summer 2015
zeltine offi cials found out that they
would be hosting the 2016 Ryder Cup, they
have been preparing for the event.
" Arguably, we're the largest privately fi nanced
major sports venue in the state, " Patrick Hunt, general
chair of the Ryder Cup, says. " We have a mission
to conduct these championships, so part of
that mission is staying relevant and appealing to the
entities that are co-hosting that event. If we don't
continue to evolve, we won't be able to fulfi ll that
mission. And when you join Hazeltine, there is an
expectation that you will be a part of that. "
Course Renovation
Prior to the 2002 PGA Championship, the club identifi
ed a problem of encroaching poa annua grass on
its greens, so a decision was made that following the
2009 PGA Championship, the greens would be rebuilt.
The club put together a master plan to attack
