MGA/PGA Cup Matches
I
n the big picture, the PGA holds a huge lead over the MGA in the annual goodwill
matches (27-10-2), much like how the U.S. has hammered the Europeans in the biennial
Ryder Cup matches over the years (25-13-2). For the second year in a row (making
it an official winning streak) the amateurs, like the underdog Euros, chipped away at the
pros' lead at Southview Country Club on May 19 with a 26½ to 13½ win.
The MGA got off to a fast start, getting all four points from Claudia Pilot and Leigh
Klasse, both of whom won their individual matches and the four-ball match. Jon Empanger
and Jerry Rose added another four points for the MGA with a clean sweep over
Thomas Vizina and George Smith, giving the MGA an 8-0 lead. Jesse Bull, the 2014
Minnesota State Amateur Champion, and Troy Johnson, the 2014 MGA Mid-Amateur
Champion, increased the lead to 12.5-2.5 for the MGA with a third sweep, as the two
downed Scott McDonald and Luke Benoit.
Overall, the MGA won six of the 10 four-ball matches, but pulled away in the singles
matches, winning 13 of 20.
