Rask Claims Fifth Minnesota Golf
Champions Title

layton Rask's final-round 68 (74-72-68-214, -4)-including
a birdie at the 18th-claimed a one-stroke victory,
the first-place check of $2,150 and a tie for the history
books on May 10 during the Minnesota Golf Champions at the
Minneapolis Golf Club. It was the fifth time Rask won the Golf
Champions crown, which ties the record set by Don Berry in
2010. Berry nearly won the tournament for the sixth time, closing
with a 71 (215), second to Rask.
Scott Gustafson was the low amateur for the third time, and
he tied Wisconsin pro Ryan Helminen for third place at 216.
Helminen matched Berry's 71, the second-best score of the day,
and Gustafson shot 72.
What was different about Rask's victory this time was that he
won with a regulation-length putter (he has used a long putter
since high school). However, it was Rask's aggressiveness with
the driver, and his prodigious length, that set up birdies at holes
1, 8, 9, 11 and 18, and the ultimate test for the new short putter
and the modified claw grip that Rask uses to wield it.

In the Past Masters, Rick Ehrmanntraut managed a bulky
putter (he missed three 3-foot putts in a five-hole stretch) to
win the division for the fourth time in five years. He shot 73 in
Saturday's first round and got through the first 26 holes of the
tournament in 1-over-par, before his putter turned into a traitor
for a while. However, by then he had a sizable cushion and an
eventual three-stroke victory.
