ponds. A neat local diversion is the
summer Friday night performances of
the Little Crow Waterski Team.
Benson Golf Club originated in
1925, but after Goldstrand's tweak, it's
not a pushover at 70.5/126 from the
blues. Koronis Hills in Paynesville debuted
in 1929 and also got the Goldstrand
touch, playing to a par 71.
In 1931, Willmar Country Club
opened with a creek winding through
the course and ponds and lake views
fortifying the natural feel. Today the
course's new moniker honors that
ever-present creek, and Eagle Creek
Golf Club and The Oaks Restaurant
maintain their popularity.
Since 1927 Litchfi eld Golf Club has
entertained players on the shores of
Lake Ripley. The course is a good challenge
for a par 70, located in an historic
city with 15-plus parks, a nature
center and arboretum.
Crow River Golf Club got its start
in 1938 on the shores of Lake Campbell
in Hutchinson. A massive new
clubhouse features Birdie's Grill &
Sports Pub, and the very well-maintained
track boasts a $50 green fee.
Ortonville is an 1872 town on Big
Stone Lake. Golf staffer Adam Eller
says players have said the views here
" compare to any place they've played. "
You can see South Dakota from the
par-72 No. 18, as well as the entire
expanse of the lake, where the Minnesota
River connects with the Red River
of the North. What might be the best
deal in the state, the course has all-day
golf Mondays for $35, including cart.
The Crossings in Montevideo
started in 1923 and was improved in
1994 by Goldstrand. The course has
a breathtaking location on the confl
uence of the Minnesota and Chippewa
rivers. Also in 1994, Goldstrand
double-dipped nearby,
upgrading
the 1923 Pomme de Terre nine-hole
in the college town of Morris. At
71.3/133 from the blue, it's the toughest
course on this tour.
