ver its 100-year history, the Minneapolis
Golf Club has probably
had the most illustrious group of
head professionals of any Minnesota
club. The 10 men who
have held the position since 1916
include fi ve members of the Minnesota Golf Hall
of Fame: Les Bolstad, Gunnard Johnson, Joel Goldstrand,
Dave Haberle and William D. " Bill " Clark.
Their collective accomplishments include winning
every state professional and amateur title, designing
dozens of the state's best-known golf courses and
playing in four of golf's majors-the Masters, the U.S.
Open, the PGA Championship and the U.S Amateur.
Even those who did not crack golf's competitive
record books left indelible marks on the club and on
Minnesota golf with their winning personalities and
contributions to the game.
Shortly after establishing the club at its fi rst site in
Golden Valley, MGC hired Interlachen assistant Elwood
Queen as its fi rst head pro and Interlachen assistant
superintendent Victor Larson as greenskeeper.
Queen headed back home to Maryland after the 1916
golf season, but Larson remained with the club for its
fi rst 28 years.
When the club moved to its current site in St.
Louis Park, it hired William D. " Bill " Clark to succeed
Queen. A native Scotsman, Clark was a successful amateur
player before heading off to his fi rst club pro job
in Australia in 1903. Three years later he voyaged to
the United States, where he became the fi rst head pro
at the Annandale Golf Club in Pasadena, Calif.
