WILLIAM D. " BILL " CLARK
(1917-1920)
In 1909 Clark was on the move again, this time to
the Omaha Field Club, where he redesigned parts of the
course. Upon being hired by Minneapolis Golf Club in
March 1917, Clark immediately undertook the task of
overseeing the completion of Willie Park Jr.'s design for
the MGC course. The fi nished product was not precisely
as Park had laid it out the previous fall, so Clark
must have been given a free hand by the club to add his
own touches.
In 1919 Clark was hired to expand the state's fi rst
public golf course, Glenwood (now Theodore Wirth),
from nine to 18 holes, and he redesigned the original
University of Minnesota nine-hole course. He left Minneapolis
Golf Club in 1920 to design Oak Ridge Country
Club in Hopkins, where he also became the fi rst
head pro. Clark then designed Superior Golf Club (now
known as Brookview) and left Oak Ridge to become the
second head pro at Superior in 1923. He also designed
Columbia Golf Course, Armour (now Francis Gross)
and Meadowbrook before moving to Florida, where he
continued his golf course design work.
Minneapolis Golf Club turned to a well-known local
name to replace Clark in 1920. Dow George, a native
of West Virginia and the fi rst golf pro at Interlachen,
had most recently been the head pro at the Lafayette
Club on Lake Minnetonka, where he had succeeded his
brother Otis, the head pro at
Golden Valley. George and his
wife were both excellent players,
with top fi nishes in many
state tournaments during the
1920s.
When George moved on to
take the head pro job at the
Edina Country Club, he was
succeeded at MGC by Ernest
Penfold of Winnipeg, also a
fi ne player who fi nished in the
top 10 at the Minnesota State
Open seven times between
1926 and 1937. His performance as a club pro, however,
was not as consistent. The MGC board investigated
member complaints against him as early as 1931, and
in early 1938, the board terminated him after receiving
a petition from the membership.
The club's next pro, 1926 U.S. Public Links champ
Les Bolstad, had worked at MGC as a ranger back in
1928. He made a favorable impression on the membership
that summer, and in subsequent years continued to
have great success in tournament play. He won the State
Amateur in 1931, the same year he fi nished runner-up
to Johnny Goodman in the Trans-Mississippi tournament
at Golden Valley. He won his fi rst State Open in
1933 as an amateur, then won three more after turning

Minnesota Golf Hall of Fame, see p. 34.
MGC has
probably had the
most illustrious
group of head
pros of any
Minnesota club.
