original nine-hole University of Minnesota course,
started his career with two Minnesota Public Links
championships, and also won two Minnesota PGA
championships, making him the only man to win all
four major state championships. After four years as
head pro at neighboring Westwood Hills, Bolstad was
invited to cross the fence in 1938 and become head
pro at MGC. He was a drawing card on his own when
he and his successor at Westwood Hills, Gunnard
Johnson, took on visiting pros Sam Snead and Ralph
Guldahl in a much-hyped exhibition match held at
MGC on May 12, 1940.
Bolstad left MGC in 1945 to take the head pro job
at Golden Valley Golf Club and was replaced by Gunnard
Johnson, a native-born Swede,
who won 10 state PGAs, beginning in
1931 when he was head pro at Hillcrest
Country Club. After Hillcrest, Johnson
was the head pro at Northwood Golf
Club in North St. Paul, Bloomington
Golf Club (now Minnesota Valley) and
then Westwood Hills before beginning
his 27-year career at Minneapolis Golf
Club. Johnson was the host pro for
MGC's two most signifi cant championships,
the 1950 U.S. Amateur and the
1959 PGA. Johnson also qualifi ed for
the '59 PGA, though he missed the cut.
When Johnson retired as MGC's
longest-serving pro in 1973, the club
reached out to the PGA Tour ranks
for his successor, 34-year-old Joel Goldstrand. Goldstrand's
Worthington High School golf team won the
state championship his senior year, and in the fall of
1957, he enrolled at the University of Houston, where
coach Dave Williams was beginning his decades-long
run of dominance. Goldstrand joined the PGA Tour
in 1965. His best year was 1969, when he fi nished
72nd on the money list. In 1970 he tied for 12th at
the U.S. Open at Hazeltine, which helped him land
a spot in the 1971 Masters. By then, however, Goldstrand
and his wife had a young family and traveling
was becoming more diffi cult. When he was asked to
apply for the Minneapolis Golf Club head pro job, it
was an easy decision.
In 1975 Goldstrand created the Minnesota Golf
Champions tournament, modeled after the Masters
and open to all of the state's past champions. Gold28
