DAVE HABERLE

strand had begun a small sideline as a golf course architect
in 1969, but when his design of The Pines at
Grand View Lodge in Brainerd became a huge success
in 1989, he decided to give up his club pro job to devote
all of his time to golf architecture.
Goldstrand's last full year at MGC was 1989. He
stayed around for part of 1990 to help his replacement,
Dave Haberle, make the transition to head pro. Haberle
was an outstanding player from Edina who won the
State Junior Championship in 1966 and 1967, the 1970
Minnesota State Open at Bunker Hills, the 1971 State
Amateur at Edina, and was an All-American in 1970
and 1971 at the University of Minnesota. He made two
brief tries on the PGA Tour, and had been working as
an assistant pro at North Oaks when he got the call
from MGC.
Haberle was succeeded in 1994 by Dave Podas, who
caddied at Hiawatha Golf Club as a boy and ended up
head pro there after attending Baylor University and
the University of Minnesota. Podas also worked at
Phoenix Country Club before being named head pro
at MGC.
He was popular with the members and was a tough
competitor in the local professional events. In 2002, his
social skills helped Podas land the head professional
job at the celebrity-dotted Bel-Air Country Club in
Los Angeles, where the membership roster includes
Jack Nicholson, Tom Cruise and Kelsey Grammer.
Dan Simpson replaced Podas in 2003. He grew up in
Mound, played on the Mound High School golf team
and then played college golf at the University of Minnesota.
His fi rst golf job was working in the pro shop at
Burl Oaks when he was 14. He later worked at Olympic
Hills, Edina Country Club and the Les Bolstad Course
at the University of Minnesota. He opened Tonto
Verde golf course in Arizona, and then became the fi rst
head pro at The Wilds in Prior Lake. Four years there
and four at Olympic Hills led to his current 14-year
run at Minneapolis Golf Club.
Simpson says he is most proud of having 15 of his
assistants go on to be head pros or general managers
at other clubs. With a Minneapolis Golf Club pedigree
on their resumes, their success is not surprising. MG
