MGA GOES MOBILE
It seems like everyone owns a
smartphone, and MGA members
are no different than the rest of
the population who want to stay
connected. By 2020, 80 percent
of adults will own a smartphone.
Seventy-eight percent of MGA
members own a smartphone, and,
not surprisingly, mobile access
to the MGA website, mngolf.org,
has grown exponentially-up 61
percent in 2015. In April, the MGA
launched a
mobile-friendly
version of its
website to
keep pace with
technology.
Smartphone
owners will find
web content
displayed in a
mobile-friendly
format, while MGA members, who
log in with their GHIN ID and last
name, will be able to post scores,
search for courses by " nearest "
(using their phone's GPS location),
and follow live scoring during MGA
championships, qualifiers, member
days and the senior tour, USGA
local and sectional qualifying
events, and more.
" The new mobile display makes
navigating our existing web
content easy and convenient for
smartphone users on the golf
course, or on the go away from
their traditional desktop computer, "
says W.P. Ryan, MGA marketing and
communications director. " We're
excited by the concept of mobile
content, and are adding more
mobile-friendly functionality as it's
developed. "

Derry Boyd, a former MGA tournament volunteer and elected director (2002-2008),
passed away May 3. As an MGA tournament volunteer, Boyd made it a habit to assist
at 10 to 12 golf events every season, and was known for his respectful demeanor
and good-natured interactions with players, volunteers and staff inside the ropes.
As a co-owner of the Mount Frontenac ski resort and golf course in Red Wing, he
was active in the Midwest Golf Course Owners and the National Golf Course Owners
associations. Boyd graduated from Princeton University in 1948, where he was
a member of the varsity golf team. He retired from 3M as a senior executive, and
raised eight children while living in Edina with his wife, Sis. Memorial gifts can be
made to the Alzheimer's Association's Minnesota/North Dakota chapter.
3M Championship
The Greats of Golf will be back in action
during the second round of the Champions
Tour 3M Championship, taking place Aug.
6 at TPC Twin Cities. At presstime, Jack
Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Gary Player, Dave
Stockton, Annika Sorenstam, Hale Irwin,
Johnny Miller, Ben Crenshaw, Nancy Lopez
and Pat Bradley had committed to play.
Kenny Perry is back to defend his title
(last year, Perry posted an 18-under-par
198 to beat Kevin Sutherland, Bernhard
Langher and Scott Dunlap, who tied for
second at 202) and attempt three consecutive
years atop the leaderboard. David Frost,
the 2010 champ, owns the tournament record
(191 or 25-under-par) and a share
of the course record (61 or 11-under-par)
after Perry matched it during last year's
second round. Perry, from Elizabethtown,
Ky., has won 14 times on the PGA Tour and
eight times on the Champions Tour, amassing
$39,378,366 in career earnings.
Other players who have committed include
Jeff Sluman, Tom Lehman, Mark
O'Meara, Rocco Mediate, Corey Pavin
and Ian Woosnam. The winner's prize is
$262,500 from a total purse of $1.75 million.
Organizers have raised more than $21
million for local charities since 1993.
