A Winning Attitude

om Abts didn't originally plan to become a golf pro.
The pro and manager at Deer Run Golf Club in Victoria
started out college at Arizona State University wanting
to be a journalist, but he began playing golf and fell in
love with the game.
A self-proclaimed obsessive by nature, Abts was
more concerned about " the pursuit of the golf
swing " than he was with scoring on the course,
and at age 35, he took up the profession of golf
pro after working as a salesman for years. The
two careers melded together more than one might
think, and now 25 years later, Abts is one of the more
unique and successful golf pros you will fi nd in the area.
" As crazy as it sounds, my odd background was an advanMidwest
Golf Course Owners Association Course of the Year in
2016. His innovative management style led to some national
recognition in Golf Digest magazine for his FastPlayFriday
program (working to get rounds in under four hours). Deer
Run's " Kids Play Free with a Parent on Weekend Afternoons, "
along with his unusual marketing approach,
helped him win Golf Inc. magazine's Innovator of
the Year. Abts uses advertising campaigns that
include parodies of movies, such as " 2017: A Golf
Odyssey " or last year's take on The Wizard of Oz
( " There's No Place Like Home " ). He dabbles in music

the plunge. " I'd run businesses. I could sell. I could market
and promote. Also, I'd spent many years as a golf customer-I
knew how that felt. "
At Deer Run since 1991, Abts and his staff have garnered
a number of awards at the club, including most recently

spinoffs as well, as with " Fairway to Heaven. "
" Golf is a great game. Not just for obsessive people like
me, " Abts says. " Golf is a wonderful way for a family to spend
time together. Golf is a nice venue for doing business. Golf is
an unbelievably satisfying game to play well. Golf played alone
at sunset or sunrise can be a mystical experience. The game of
golf is timeless. "
And such an attitude about the game is a great recipe for
success.
