Meadowbrook in Minneapolis
played host to the 1947 national
championship, won by Wilfred
Crossley. (Other national publinks
were hosted by Gross in 1964,
Bunker Hills in 1976, Edinburgh
USA in 1992 and Rush Creek in
1994. The women's national public
links was held at Braemar in 1979.)
Through the MPGA's
fi rst
three decades, barriers between it
and the broader Minnesota Golf
Association had been erected. The
1950s brought efforts to remove
them. " During the middle '50s,
we sat down and got this thing
organized a lot tighter, " former
MGA president Warren Rebholz
was quoted as saying in George
E. Brown III's book " 100 Years
of Minnesota Golf: Our Great
Tradition. " " The smartest decision
the [MGA] board made during
those years was that there was not
going to be any difference between
a private club and a public club.
Everybody is a golfer and any club
can join the organization. "
Today, the Minnesota Public
Golf Association is an all-volunteer,
allied association of the MGA.
It serves about 80 member men's
clubs in the state, according to its
website, and conducts state-level
and inter-club competitions. The
" Why Public Golf " entry on its
home page concludes with this
notion: " Public golf is a microcosm
of society. You can get a game with
all and sundry. Exclusivity is not
a big item. The public golf course
can be a melting pot not unlike the
ideal of America. "

Minneapolis Star Tribune and
author of " Fore! Gone. Minnesota's
Lost Golf Courses, 1897-1999. " He
has a second book on lost courses
planned for release later this year.
