2020 Scholars Honored

Scholarship,
Robert " Bobby "
Reith Jr.
1940-2020
Robert " Bobby " Reith Jr, 80, of
Sun Center, Fla., passed away May
29. A fi fth generation golfer, Reith
won numerous tournaments
throughout his career,
including
the Minnesota Section PGA
Championships in 1964, 1967,
1969 and 1972, along with the
Minnesota State Open in 1969.
Reith's talent took him to the
PGA Tour in 1965, and the PGA
Champions Tour from 1990-1994.
In 2003, he was inducted into the
Minnesota Golf Hall of Fame.
Not only was Reith a talented
golfer, but as a young man he
found success in other sports as
well, including hockey. He was
named to the Minnesota state tournament
" All-Tournament Team "
while playing for the St. Louis Park
Orioles in 1958, and played college
hockey for the University of
Minnesota Golden Gophers for a
season.
Aside from athletics,
Reith
enjoyed teaching, fi rst as a golf
pro at Northland Country Club
in Duluth, and eventually, at The
Minikahda Club in Minneapolis,
where he joined his father (Robert
Sr.), who was the club's golf professional
for 32 years. Most of Reith's
teaching career though was spent at
Edina Country Club, where he held
the position of club professional
from 1967 to 1981.
Reith's endless passion for golf
has left a lasting impact which will
be felt for generations to come. He
is survived by his wife of 60 years,
Kay, and their sons Rick and Tom.
NICOLE OLSON
Women's
formerly the MWGA
Foundation Scholarship, recently awarded
academic scholarships to deserving young
women in need of fi nancial assistance
with their post-secondary school education.
The two 2020 Minnesota Women's
Scholarship honorees are:
Vanessa Hawkins, of Caledonia, Minn.,
graduated Caledonia High School and
will attend Gustavus Adolphus College in
St. Peter, Minn., where she will be majoring
in Physics. Among Hawkins achievements,
she played four years of varsity
golf and served as president of Caledonia's
honor society;
Nicole Olson, of Cook, Minn., graduated
North Woods High School and
will attend University of Jamestown in
Jamestown, N.D., where she plans to
In addition to
serving as captain of North Woods' golf
and volleyball
teams, Olson was also
elected class president.
The academic scholarship is $3,000 per
year toward undergraduate tuition, books,
and room and board, and is renewable for
four years.
Recipients are selected on the basis of
academics, fi nancial need, and quality of
character demonstrated by civic and academic
activities, in addition to involvement
in the game of golf (although
skill or excellence in the latter is not a
prerequisite).
