nlike the storybook ending he was anticipating as the
2020 high school golf season approached earlier this
spring, Gunnar Broin's fi nish at Bunker Hills Golf
Club June 9 is the next best thing. The Minnetonka Skipper
and Colorado State University commit posted a 5-under 67
during his fi nal competitive high school round to claim the
2020 Minnesota Senior Showcase.
" Even though this wasn't the state tournament, I was playing
like it was. That was my mindset. I have a lot of memories on
this course and know it well, " Broin said Tuesday. " My dad was
telling me that I need to let it all hang out because it's my last
one, and I was so glad I could perform.
Wedging his approach to 12 feet at the par-4 eighth hole,
Broin drilled his left-to-right slider and would never look back,
adding one more birdie over his fi nal nine holes to earn a twostroke
victory over Edina's Cole Nasby.
" This means a lot and hopefully proves to everyone that I
was hungry and ready to take back a state title, " Broin said. " I
really think Minnetonka as a team would've really had a good
chance this year. I really wish we could see what would happen,
but I guess we'll never know. "

There may not be many high school golfers anticipating their
senior season as much as Eastview's Jaycee Rhodes had been in
recent months. When COVID-19 cut short her senior year and
cancelled the spring season including the state tournament,
Rhodes was devastated.
" When I found out we weren't going back to school, I felt
like I lost so much; I lost my senior year and my prom. The next
day when they said there was no golf season-that broke me
down. I'd already lost my junior year, " said Rhodes, explaining
that after transferring to Eastview as a junior for the 2018-2019
school year, she was only eligible to play junior varsity sports.
Competing against a fi eld of more than 70 girls in breezy and
cool conditions, Rhodes, who has committed to St. Catherine
University in St. Paul, shrugged off a pair of early bogeys to
post an even-par 72 and claim a one-stroke victory June 10 at
Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids. Wayzata High School's
Amy Burnham and Stillwater High School's Catherine Monty
both carded 1-over 73 to fi nish tied for second place.
With their respective victories June 9 and 10, Broin and Rhodes
earn spots in the 2020 Boys and Girls High School Golf Invitationals
Aug. 3-5 at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst Village, N.C.
