The Great Stake Debate
Another look at our old familiar Rules for red and yellow
markers on penalty areas.
A
rguably the most well-known rules in golf (due, perhaps,
to many golfers' experience with them) pertains
to the red and yellow stakes marking Penalty Areas
(formerly known as Water Hazards). Still, players are often
unclear about the different relief options available to them
when they hit their ball into an area marked with red or yellow
stakes that identify or define those penalty areas. Not to mention,
there were slight changes made to penalty area Rules in
2019. A couple diagrams (included below) displaying the relief
areas associated with the different options may help.
To proceed under Rule 17: Penalty Areas, it must be " known
or virtually certain " that the ball is in the penalty area-which
means you are 95% certain it's in there. Without this degree of
certainty, you must treat the ball as a Lost Ball (Rule 18), add
one stroke and make the dreaded walk (or ride) back to where
you last played.

Let's look at relief from Yellow Penalty Areas first, where you
have two options.
Players may take stroke-and-distance relief by adding one
penalty stroke and playing a ball from where they played
their previous stroke (shaded area #1 in diagram 1).
Add one penalty stroke and take " back-on-the-line " relief.
To do this, use the point where your original ball last
crossed the edge of the penalty area and go straight back, keeping
that point between you and the hole. Drop a ball in a relief
area based on this line (shaded area #2 in diagram 1). There is
no limit to how far you can go back on this line, as long as you
stay on the course. Please note that the line your ball took to
