get into its watery grave, whether it hooked, sliced or did something
indescribable, has nothing to do with how you determine
where to drop. Just focus on where your ball last crossed the
edge of the penalty area.
Now let's look at the three options for Red Penalty Areas.
Options 1 and 2 are the same as the Yellow Penalty Area above
(shaded areas #1 and #2 in diagram 2):

Add one penalty stroke and take lateral relief by dropping
a ball in a relief area. This relief area is two club lengths,
not nearer the hole, and is measured from the estimated point
where the ball last crossed the edge of the penalty area (shaded
area #3 in diagram 2). This is likely the most popular option for
taking a drop from a red penalty area.
But I know some of you are thinking, " he forgot one option, "
to play the ball as it lies in the Penalty Area. Yes, that is an option,
and the good news is that under the new Rules of Golf (since
2019) you can now remove loose impediments and ground
your club in the penalty area. Also, as in the past, you're allowed
to remove penalty area stakes. If you do so, please put them
back so the course remains marked consistently for all players.
Hopefully this helps your understanding of how to proceed
according to the Rule, should you have the misfortune of hitting
your ball inside the yellow or red stakes.
