YOC Awards Woodbury High School
Senior College Grant
The National Youth on Course program based in Pebble
Beach, Calif., recently announced the 20 winners of its 2021
college grants program. Among the recipients was Michelle
Yang, 18, of Woodbury, Minn. Named after two-time Olympic
medalist Michelle Kwan, Yang never took to the ice rink, but
instead, was introduced to the game of golf by her father,
Kevin, an immigrant refugee from Laos.
" There are so many things I love about golf, " explains
Yang, adding, " [it] teaches you to have integrity, persistence,
patience, and even builds on your social skills. Each hole is a
fresh start and can turn your game around anytime. "
Golf has opened the door to new friendships, and impressed
the MN Youth on Course member with more than a few hardlearned
lessons.
" No matter how hard you practiced or how well you did on
the range, the golf course is a battlefi eld like no other. I had
to learn how to get out of my head and work on the mental
aspect of the game... double-bogeys are all a part of the journey.
You can't change the past, but you can certainly change
the future, " Yang said.
The second sibling to attend college, Yang says the YOC college
grant is a game-changer for the family. Not only does it
lessen the fi nancial burden, it is a ticket to her " dream school, "
the University of California, Berkeley, where Yang plans to
study marketing and fi nance.
Beyond the links, Yang stays busy as the student council
president at Woodbury High School, the Hmong Club president,
the Key Club publicist, a member of the National Honor
Society, a concert orchestra violinist and member of the
National Music Honor Society, and a volunteer at Woodwinds
Hospital who also works part-time.
Since 2008, YOC has awarded $2 million in grants to 280
scholars, 93% of whom have successfully graduated. Two east
metro MNYOC members, Taylor Gonsalez and Jack Traxler,
were awarded YOC college grants in 2020.
