MLR E-5 Ball Out of Bounds
When a player's ball is out of bounds, the player may take stroke-and-distance relief
or take a drop as prescribed above if the MLR E-5 is in play.
Terms Defined
LOST BALL
The status of a ball that is not found
in three minutes after you or your caddie
(or your partner or partner's caddie)
begin to search for it.
OUT OF BOUNDS
All areas outside the boundary edge of
the course as defined by the Committee.
All areas inside that edge are in bounds.
The boundary edge of the course extends
both up above the ground and down
below the ground.

If your original ball is found on the
course within the three-minute search
period, the " Provisional Ball " must be
abandoned, and you must proceed with
the original ball. If your ball is not found
or is OB, you must continue to play with
the " Provisional Ball " which now is the
ball in play.
And now for the good news. In 2019,
the USGA and R&A gave the Committee
the authority to add a Local Rule for general
play where golfers are playing casual
rounds. This was a boon for speeding up
play, as players no longer have to retreat to
Relief Area
where they last played upon learning their
ball is out of bounds or lost. (Please note
this Local Rule can only be used when
the Course, League, Club or Committee
has authorized its use.) When proceeding
under this Local Rule, you must add
two penalty strokes and play a ball as prescribed
in Model Local Rule E-5. The procedure
for this Local Rule is complicated,
so see the diagram for the " OB " portion.
If your Committee adopts this Local
Rule, enjoy the increased pace of play you
might find and swing away-still keeping
it in bounds if you can.
The boundary edge should be defined
by boundary objects or lines:
Boundary objects: When defined by
stakes or a fence, the boundary edge is
defined by the line between the courseside
points of the stakes or fence posts
at ground level (excluding angled supports),
and those stakes or fence posts
are out of bounds.
When defined by other objects such as
a wall or when the Committee wishes
to treat a boundary fence in a different
way, the Committee should define the
boundary edge.
Lines: When defined by a painted line
on the ground, the boundary edge is
the course-side edge of the line, and the
line itself is out of bounds.
When a line on the ground defines the
boundary edge, stakes may be used
to show where the boundary edge
is, but they have no other meaning.
Boundary stakes or lines should
be white.
