from the game of golf

of humility. "

marrow transplants, a total hip replacement, CAR
T-cell therapy, and battled secondary cancer caused by
his treatments. The cancer diagnoses and subsequent
treatments have been a financial burden on his family.
" Because of my medical history with multiple cancer
diagnoses, weekly recreational golfing would normally
not be a regular part of my family's budget. Since
YOC provides such reduced rates, I can golf much
more frequently than if I was paying full green fees, "
Taggart explains.
Taggart plans to attend the University of St. Thomas and
is considering majoring in engineering or journalism.
Yang was introduced to the game of golf by taking
trips to the practice range with her father throughout
her childhood. Once she hit her first ball, she knew
that golf was going to be a big part of her life, which turned
out to be true.
" I like how competitive it [golf] is and how it challenges me, "
Yang says, adding, " It's me against the course and everything I
learn on the course. ... has helped me build a stronger mentality. "
That is not the only lesson the MNYOC member has learned
from her time on the golf course.
" The most important lesson I've learned from the game of
golf was the practice of humility, " Yang explains. " It's an important
lesson to me because it has taught me that win or lose, I
should always show respect to my fellow golf players. "
She plans to study biology at the University of Minnesota
Duluth and later attend medical school to become a family doctor.
Since the inception of the scholarship program in 2008, 300
YOC members have been awarded financial support totaling
over $2 million. Ninety-three percent of the recipients of the
scholarship have gone on to graduate college. Three MNYOC
members have received the scholarship prior to this year:
Michelle Yang, a Woodbury, Minn. resident, was awarded the
scholarship in 2021 and is currently attending the University
of California, Berkeley, studying marketing and finance. Taylor
Gonsalez, of West St. Paul, Minn., received the scholarship in
2020 and is attending Columbia University studying finance,
and Jack Traxler, of Saint Paul, who also received the award in
2020, is attending Iowa State University, studying engineering
and science.
