UW-Madison's campus is one of a tiny
handful in the U.S. where students can
learn to speak Sámi, the language of the
indigenous people of northern Norway,
Sweden, Finland and Russia.
The 10-year-old Sámi language
and culture courses fit with a bigger
trend that Kirsten Wolf, chair of UWMadison's
Scandinavian department,
sees: Students are taking increased
interest in the cultural values and
historical context that surround the
Nordic languages. Study abroad
programs, including a new exchange
with Iceland that begins this fall, are an
important part of that exploration.
Instead of literature, as in the
past, the majority of the university's
Scandinavian graduate students now
specialize in philology, which is the
study of language history, or folklore,
Wolf says. " Folklore I think appeals to
some students because it offers [career]
opportunities outside of academia. "
That could mean working at
museums or cultural centers. But
Scandinavian program alumni are also
translators, teachers of English as a
second language, attorneys and much
more, Wolf says: " Our majors do so
many different things. "

Icelandic and Sámi taught periodically or
on an individual basis

courses-early and late Ingmar
Bergman, Danish director Carl Dreyer,
a new course being developed on
Lars Von Trier-than any other in
North America.
New Nordic crime and detective
fiction courses are popular, too, but
so are sagas and mythology, says
Arne Lunde, who is UCLA's head of
the Scandinavian section. He believes
Nordic culture courses are filling a
need that's more sharply felt by
students now.
Under pressure to choose majors
that will lead to jobs and pay off loans,
students still hunger for the humanities,
Lunde says. " It's why they'll do a minor
in Scandinavian, or they'll do a double
major, say, in a microbiology and

Scandinavian or political science and
Scandinavian. "
At the same time, humanities
programs are under pressure to update
themselves and stay relevant, Lunde
adds. In developing a new Nordic
studies B.A., his own department will
" cross-list more of our classes with
other departments and focus more on
21st century issues where Scandinavia
is at the forefront in terms of the
Arctic, the environment, sustainability,
alternative energy . . . and the model of
the Scandinavian social welfare state. "
