They used a single mic to record the drum
kit to a mono track, giving the album's
backbeat a rawer, unpolished quality.
Additionally, drums, piano, guitar and
bass were all recorded in the same room
in an attempt to emulate the mic bleed
heard in many of the famous girl group
records of the 1950s and 1960s.
For Leon Bridges' debut album Coming
Home released in 2015, producer Austin Jenkins utilized a 1948 Collins 212A
8x2 Tube Recording Console, among
a whole host of other vintage pieces of
gear, many of which date back to the late
1940s. At his Niles City Sound studios in
Fort Worth, Texas, Jenkins recorded Leon
Bridges in a tented corner of the large
cement warehouse that used to house
golf equipment. One can't help but be
reminded of those early Paramount sessions, though Austin Jenkins undoubtedly
would have paid a lot more attention to
his cutting needles should he have used
them. So when Lady Gaga sought to reinvent her career in 2016, it's no surprise
that instead of doubling down on the
crispy synths and perfectly Auto-Tuned
vocals, she stripped everything away
and placed vintage vibe master Mark
Ronson at the helm of her record Joanne.
As artists like Alabama Shakes and
Leon Bridges garner the attention of
The Recording Academy, and more upand-coming artists like J.S. Ondara are
pushing further into the mainstream, the
public thirst for something different can't
be denied. Perhaps it's a gut reaction to
over twenty years of the cleverly quantized, heavily edited dominance of Top
40. Perhaps it's just a temporary bout
of nostalgia. Nevertheless, the revival
of vintage sound and the subsequent
return to old recording techniques is a
trend worth noting, and it inspires hope
in a throwback artist like me to keep
pressing forward. Because finally, in an
odd twist of fate, perfectly polished pop
stars are becoming a thing of the past,
and oddballs with a rip in the seam and
something to say are the future.

INTRODUCING THE
PELUSO STAGE ONE

there, the rest is Blues history. And that's
pretty much where the days of one-take
recording and mixing by horn proximity
were left in history... that is, until now.
In the film The American Epic Sessions,
a documentary released in 2017 on the
BBC and PBS respectively, Jack White
and T-Bone Burnett record twenty of today's artists on a resurrected Western
Electric recording system. The system, the
last in existence since the days of Blind
Lemon and Charley Patton, was rebuilt
during almost two decades of research by
engineer Nicholas Bergh. An astounding
thing to watch, it's also an incredible thing
to listen to. The warm, classic presence of
straight-to-vinyl recording envelops the instrumentation, as the buzzy, mid-rangy vocals flow through with a beautifully limited
frequency. As artists like Alabama Shakes
cover Memphis Minnie, or as Elton John
performs a freshly penned ditty by Bernie
Taupin, the convergence of old sounds
with current voices is dizzying. "Magic"
is one word that comes to mind. And in
all honesty, this is something we already
knew was coming.
As 2006 saw the craze surrounding
Amy Winehouse, the concept of the
Throwback Artist was unleashed upon
the music industry. And since then, the
world hasn't been able to get enough
old-timey sounding artists, or vinyl records for that matter. For the instrumentation of Winehouse's Back to Black,
producers Mark Ronson and Salaam
Remi hired vintage soul band The
Dap-Kings after efforts to recreate a
dated sound "in the box" proved futile.
