This illustration got me thinking-it's similar to microphones and their interactions with musicians, instruments, and environments. Sometimes a microphone is
the perfect color for one source, but yields completely different results on another.
Similarly, microphones from multiple manufacturers can have virtually identical
specs yet sound entirely unique.
Then we have all the adjectives that we use to describe mics: clear, clean,
vintage, warm, dark, thick... In this issue we review multiple microphones that
broadly fit the clean, clear, and detailed category, but each one has its own voice.
Such is the science and romance of microphone selection and placement.
We have an interview with Grammy® Award nominated engineer Mary Mazurek,
who shares her microphone choices and techniques for capturing the nuances
of classical music recording. Coupe Studios engineer Alex Hawley digs into the
broad range of flavors found in the Z-Mod series of microphones by ADK, and Bill
Stunt shows us how to become intimately familiar with the gear we own and how
to create personalized recording chains for all the instruments we use.
For our second set of interviews this month, we sat down with engineer Matt
Wallace, who originally tracked, produced, and now remixed the controversial
1989 Replacements album Don't Tell a Soul. We also chat with mastering engineer Justin Perkins and Replacements archivist and biographer Bob Mehr, who
helped bring Matt's new mixes, a live concert, and assorted demos and sessions
together for the multi-disc box set Dead Man's Pop on Rhino Records.
We have seven microphones from around the globe on our review menu: two
from Austria, one from Australia, one from Bulgaria, and three from the US.
In addition to our mic reviews, we have a pair of new USB audio interfaces, a
500 Series microphone preamp, and three useful delay plugins.
Darwin Grosse wraps up his look at monitoring in Studio 101, with a focus on
secondary studio monitors, headphones, and monitor controllers. Finally, we have
Readers' Tracks, and Scott Dorsey is back with another Snapshots from Recording
History, this time focusing on some of the spot miking techniques used in the early
days of recording.
