Welcome to the June 2020 issue of RECORDING. This month we're focusing on
the DAW, including plugins, synths, and audio interfaces. In the past two weeks,
I've heard from multiple manufacturers and retailers that audio interfaces are flying off the shelves. I'm encouraged by this news-it's a reminder that, no matter
the circumstances, creatives need to create. If you're new to recording, or new to

Technology!

As I was plotting out the content this month, author Joe Albano got me thinking
about the current state of technology in our industry. Joe brought up many things that
used to be time consuming or challenging that we now take for granted-editing,
punch-ins, timing fixes, effects. In Inside The Box this month, Joe reminds us that
despite these advances, just because we can, doesn't always mean we should.
Speaking of DAWs, we look at the latest Cubase and Pro Tools updates, and we also
take a first look at LUNA from Universal Audio. My first DAW was Cakewalk; I was
using it even before it added audio recording capability. At the time, rendering a mix
with a lot of plugins could literally take hours. The audio was 16-bit, and I remember
how excited I was when I got a 1GB hard drive-what was I to do with all that space?
Audio interfaces have jumped light years over the past two decades. This month
we look at three desktop offerings: the SSL 2+ from Solid State Logic, the RME
Babyface Pro FS, and the Merging+Anubis.
This month we interview synth wizard and electronic composer Richard Devine.
During our conversation, we reminisced about early samplers-how to get around
their minuscule memory limits. Richard would sample albums at 78 RPM and then
slow them down in the device so that he could fit more time into RAM. Now, sample libraries can span hundreds of gigabytes with photorealistic detail. Cases in
point: this month we look at a highly realistic brass library from East-West, as well
as the piano reimagined from Spitfire Audio.
Another area where technology has grown is in the world of plugins. In this
issue we have plugins on tap from Baby Audio, Nugen, and oeksound, as well as
an FX collection from Arturia, and the modeling of a classic LA recording space
from IK Multimedia. On the hardware side, we see how 500 Series technology
and DSP chips have resurrected a classic 1980s reverb from AMS Neve. Rounding out our reviews is a new portable power strip from Joule.
Speaking of reverb and delay, 27 plugin companies offer up their favorites in
our latest installment of That One Effects Plugin. 
Mark Hornsby returns with the continuing story of making Nick D'Virgilio's new
solo album, Invisible. This month it's time to mix-complete with downloadable
files. Devon Brent shares his advice on setting up a keyboard-based studio, Marty
Peters is back with Readers' Tracks, and we wrap up our DAW focus with author
Aaron Trumm asking, "Why pick just one?"
Addendum: last month I reviewed the Heiserman H47 Tube mic. While I highlighted two of the principles in the company, I forgot to give credit to a third
member of the team, Nashville-based Dave Wheeler, who is also involved in the
design, engineering, and assembly of the mics. Great job, Dave!
