pseudo mastering.

What about outboard?

I have a nice rack of outboard gear
at the end of my chain. I have a Manley
Vari-MU (mastering version), a Manley
ELOP, and a Crane Song STC-8. Sometimes I'll reamp signals through them to
drive them and give them a little bit of
mojo-a little less ones and zeros.

And plugins?

For reverb, I use Altiverb a lot, especially the emulated LARCs and Lexicon kinds
of stuff. The Sonnox Limiter and Inflator are
great, and the Sonnox EQs are super precise. For a vocal chain, I use the Waves
CLA1073 and CLA76 or the DMG Equality-it's really transparent and accurate.

What about drums?

I'm a big advocate for parallel compression, especially on a drum kit. So,
this might seem kind of excessive, but if
we're doing a rock thing where it needs
to be very punchy, I'll do a tom bus and
compress that and then take my already
lightly compressed individual toms into
that and then route all of them out to
my parallel buses, where I do a kind of
good, bad, and ugly kind of a thing.
I'll use an SSL comp in one bus where
it's just barely grazing one to two dB of
reduction. Then I'll have one where I'm
smashing it, but with the same attack
and release times. Then I'll have another
where I'm routing lightly to kind of a roomish verb, but it also has an SSL comp on
it. Then I'll route all of those out to a drum
master, which I then put the Cytomic 'The
Glue' compressor on. It might sound totally crazy, but it sounds good to me.

Do you compress guitars in the
mix, or do you kind of just leave
them be?
I try to leave it as uncompressed as
possible. Sometimes I use the FabFilter Multi-Band just to tame those 4kHz
spikes that make your eyeballs hurt.

Kyle talked about miking his
Leslie cabinet with stereo mics
on the top, and a mono mic on
the bottom. What's your favorite
way to mix that? Do you keep it
in mono or wide stereo?

Both. When I was younger, I lived in
Memphis for a little while, and I was in
Doug Easley's studio. They used the single mic technique, sometimes just like an
SM57 a foot away, and that was it. And
it sounded perfect. But now I'll use Kyle's
setup or two 409 mics on the top and a
Sennheiser 421 on the bottom, or a pair
of DPA 2011 mics on the top. Then, kind
of what we were talking about before,
I'll record all the mics, and then strip it
back to whatever works in the mix, or
send it to a bus and go from there.

How do you appease a band of
that many people when you're
doing a mix?

It's challenging [laughs], but they seem
to trust me and have the understanding
of, "Let's let Dros do what he does, and
then we can pick at the mix." There's definitely the artist thing-oh, this is too loud,
or, why did you play that? But these guys
are really quality people, and they get it.
Everybody seems to come together and
agree on things, and sometimes I get to
be the tiebreaker guy.
