The Dos and Don'ts
of Flute Recording

Top tips and advice for the perfect flute sound, from mic placement to mixing software

I

t's a great time to be a professional freelance musician. While
musicians have historically relied on live performances and pro
studio recordings, technology now enables virtually anyone to
create beautiful recordings and mixes from the comfort of their
own homes. As a professional flutist that spends a lot of time
recording on scores for films and TV shows, the flexibility and
convenience offered by remote recording is a huge benefit.
However, there are some challenges involved. Quality is paramount to studio recordings, so creating the right environment is
essential. I've done a lot of remote recordings over the last few
years, including all the flute solos for the entire season of the recently released Netflix show Locke & Key, so I've put a lot of time
into making sure that my studio meets the required standard.
I need to create the cleanest recordings possible, so I've
installed sound-absorbing acoustic panels in my studio to improve the sound quality and acoustic baffles to block out external noise. I also have a high-end mic and audio interface
to make sure the sound quality is as professional as possible.
Beyond the studio environment, here are some of my top tips
for getting the best results possible when recording. I'll focus
on the flute, but much of this advice will apply to other solo
instruments as well.

Test your setup

Unlike live performance, when recording, you're under the
microscope. My room is completely dry and not very forgiving.
You have to be more aware of your breathing-you don't want
to be gasping for air because it will get picked up by the mics.
The same is true for how hard you push down the keys; in the
studio, close-miking can pick up every key click.
Because every room and microphone are different, it's important to experiment with mic placement. I've seen a lot of
people mic the flute either by the mouthpiece or at the end,
which isn't necessarily the best place when recording. I've
found that the optimum mic position is in the middle of the flute,
right where the keys are; this is where most of the sound comes
from. If you record by your mouth, it might sound too airy, so
I'd always advise placing the mic in the middle.
My biggest tip is to always listen to the recordings straight away
after a test pass or two. It can be easy to assume that everything
sounds fine only to realize that you don't like the mic placement,
or you have click bleed or improper levels. There's nothing worse
than getting to the end and having to start all over again, or being
forced to fix it in the mix; it's much easier to figure everything out
at the beginning and get a recording you're happy with.
