Trident EQ plugins
Two classic rock 'n' roll EQs get their due
in a new pair of plugins
Silo Soundlabs is a consortium of acousticians, audio engineers, musicians
and coders. The group has pressed its combined years of experience in the audio
arts and sciences into creating highly accurate emulations of vintage analog
gear. Its 'SiloDNA' proprietary DSP modeling methodology is designed to produce
exceptional modeling accuracy while maximizing CPU efficiency and providing
very low latency. Silo Soundlabs recently launched the first of its 'Vintage Series'
plugins with a pair of classic Trident EQ emulations: the much-lauded 80B, and
the more obscure CB9066. Cool choices, as (to my knowledge) neither of these
classic EQs have ever been released in plugin form.
The Trident name and sound are legendary. When brothers Barry and Norman
Sheffield opened Trident Studio in the late 1960s, they designed and built their
own consoles. Consulting with audio legends like Roy Thomas Baker, Ken Scott,
Malcolm Toft and Barry Potter, they gave birth to the legendary Trident A Range
console. The list of artists that recorded at Trident Studios includes The Beatles,
The Rolling Stones, Queen, Elton John, David Bowie, and Marc Bolan.
Many other console designs followed the original A range. Arguably, the most
beloved was the well-built and relatively more affordable 80B. It gained a reputation
as a great rock 'n' roll desk with solid preamps and a master bus that produced an
attractive saturation when driven. The star of the 80B however, was its EQ section.

80B 500 Series

The 80B EQs were so popular that Trident released a standalone 500 Series unit
built to the exact specification of the console version; a 500 Series unit was used as
the model for this plugin. Graphically, the plugin is very similar to the hardware unit,
though its orientation is horizontal rather than vertical.
 The 80B is a four-band equalizer with a midrange sweep. Variable shelving bands
are positioned at both sides: these can be engaged at 60Hz or 120Hz and 8kHz or
12kHz, respectively. The right-hand side also features a highpass filter that can be

switched in to provide 12dB/octave attenuation at 50Hz. The midrange is covered by two fixed, broad peaking filters
at 100Hz to 1.5kHz for the low mids,
and 1kHz to 15kHz for the high mids;
all four bands offer 15dB of cut or boost.
The relatively wide filter bands (and
quirky circuit design) results in a very
smooth-sounding EQ. Subtle tweaks
are effective yet unobtrusive. Significant
boosts can really alter the sonic landscape while preserving the fundamental
character of the sound being shaped. 
Extreme boosts can get ugly with many
EQs, but not with the 80B. You can dial in
loads of high frequency without it getting
brittle or harsh. You can put a big low-frequency bloom on a kick or a bass without flooding the sonic zone. It's shocking
how much you can boost a frequency
without the sound breaking down. 
I clearly remember my first experience
with a Series 80 console. I captured and
sculpted one of the best guitar sounds
of my recording career. Intrigued by
this memory, the first thing I applied this
EQ to was a track of single coil electric
guitar played through a VOX AC30 using the top boost input-a classic rock
sound. Instant magic! I was able to both
pull out the chime and beef up the character of the mild distortion to perfection.  
The Trident rock pedigree comes
through when applied to snare drums.
Pulling out the 'tonk' tone of a snare
is easy in the low mid band. Boosting
the highs makes a snare snap, and the
amount of crunchiness you can dial in
between 2kHz and 4kHz is awesome.
The 80B EQ works great on all of the
staple rock instruments. I applied it liberally across a mix featuring Hammond B3,
Fender Rhodes, (this EQ loves electric piano) acoustic and electric guitars, bass,
and drums. Using it on multiple tracks
was not an issue. The mix sounded coherent, pleasantly more analog, and less
in the box. It's apparent why these EQs
are featured on so many great records.
If you follow the dictum that you boost
frequencies with a wide band and cut
with a narrow band, you'll have already
realized that this EQ is far more effective
at pushing frequencies forward than it is at
pulling them out. This is less a surgical EQ
and more an effective musical tone shaper.
