The sequencer has also been greatly expanded to eight tracks and 128
patterns (16 patterns x 8 banks). The
sequencer also boasts modern features
such as step loop, substeps, flams, intros
and fill-ins and probability functions.
Best of all, accessing these internal
functions is well implemented and easy
to navigate. One other cool feature is
that while there are no individual drum
outs, you can send each output into your
DAW on a separate track over USB.

Conclusion

Roland has done a great job of breathing new life into an old friend. The extra
sounds and expanded feature set are
most welcome. I know many purists are
thinking, but it's digital! My response: the
sounds in the TR-606 were pretty minimal
and limited to begin with. If offered a
choice between a mint original and the
new Roland Boutique specimen, I'd go
with the TR-06. It's actually a no-brainer-the added sound shaping, expanded
sequencer, stereo outs, additional added
outputs via USB, and good onboard effects make this the winner in my book.

Roland TR-606 Software
Rhythm Composer

The TR-606 Software Rhythm Composer
is a software emulation of the classic TR606, available on its own or with a Roland
Cloud subscription. Visually, the TR-606
software sticks closer to the original than
the TR-06, but again, looks are deceiving-
it offers a welcome expanded feature set.
The trio of middle knobs look the same but
perform different functions: shuffle (a feature missing on the 1981 hardware), and
step length. Both units use ACB technology,
but the TR-606 plugin lacks onboard effects
and alternate voices. However, opening a
hidden top panel gives you quick access to
tweaking the drum tones for gain, tuning,
decay and panning, as well as the kick
attack, snare snap and tom color. What's
more, because you're in a DAW, each of
these parameters is automatable.
The sequencer, like the TR-06 hardware,
offers flams, ratcheting, subsets and per-instrument swing settings. A hidden bottom
panel exposes a full-featured multi-track
break out of the sequencer, making detailed
groove creation even more manageable,
and said MIDI grooves can be dragged
and dropped (exported) into your DAW.
A collection of eight programable variation
buttons makes bringing your sequences
to life even easier in your songs and patterns, and everything is easily stored and
recalled in the DAW environment.
Having both the hardware and software editions gives you an added benefit: the TR-06 can act as a controller for
the plugin as it pertains to drum levels.

You can adjust each of the seven vintage
TR-606 sounds for gain, tuning, decay and
panning (remember, the original sounds
were fixed). Additionally, you can change
the kick attack, the snap of the snare, and
the color of the toms. You can add compression to the kick and snare. The TR-06
also offers alternate drum choices with
two additional kicks and two other snares
labeled 'rich' and 'fat'. The rich kick is 808
huge and smooth, while fat is tighter and
more aggressive. The rich snare is dark
and thick, and the fat snare is misnamed
as it sounds more sample-like and rattly.
The toms now have four alternate choices:
synth percussion, noise tom, clap, and rim
shot. Lastly, the cymbal crash offers a gated
option as well as the tom sound options.
This is great, as I rarely use the cymbal and
prefer the clave-like rim shot instead.
Multiple effects options can be routed
to the drive and delay knobs. Drive can
be a saturator, bitcrusher, distortion, or
a low/high pass filter. Delay can be
digital delay, panning delay, tape echo,
reverb, flanger or a side band filter.
