The C705 is relatively neutral, with little hype in the highs or lows. It offers an
excellent top-end clarity that keeps it out
of dusty vintage tube or overly warm ribbon territory. Yet, it's not stark and unforgiving like many modern, even high-end
condensers. For comparisons, it's more
neutral than a Neumann U 67-style mic,
not as upper-mid present as a U 87AI, or
as bright as a modern AKG C414 XLII.
Further comparisons-I found it more
open and less aggressive in the upper
mid and top-end than a U 47 FET-style
mic. It has thicker mids and more overall richness compared to an AKG C414
XLS. Of all of the mics in my collection,
it's perhaps closest to the Chandler TG
Mic (Tape Equalizer set to Flat/System 1
setting). Still, the upper midrange on the
C705 moves forward slightly, especially
on mid-heavy sources like acoustic guitar and guitar amp, and with a gently
more open top-end capture as well.
In use
I was quite impressed by how this
mic handles plosives-well controlled,
they come across as a fast thump rather
than big bursts that fart out or seize the
capsule. It has a very linear proximity
effect, which yields a tonality that remains consistent, whether inches or feet
from the mic. The lows get louder but
not boomy or exaggerated, while closer
sources increase in presence with very
little tonal change. Off-axis rejection is
well controlled, and again, as you move
off-axis the sound quickly gets quieter
but doesn't change in overall tonality except for less perceived low end.
You can get very up close and personal with the C705. Its unexaggerated
neutrality is well suited for capturing the
nuance, detail, and intimacy of vocal
performances. In my initial sessions, I
rarely found a pop filter necessary. This
detail made it quite pleasant on acoustic
guitar and baritone ukulele-yes, ukulele. The C705 does have a lower output
than much of the competition. Still, I never found it noisy, and this also allows for
its use on louder sources, such as drum
overheads (overhead in this case), guitar amps, and aggressive vocalists. In
each case, it captured smooth, neutral
details without bite, harshness or graininess. Like every Josephson mic I've
ever used, the C705 is at home on any
source, near or far. Just grab it, place it
and hit record.
Conclusion
David Josephson and his team did
a great job of whittling down the design of the C705 to the bare essentials.
While there may be concessions made
with regard to some of the cutting-edge
accoutrements found on its upper-echelon brethren, there are no compromises
to sound, quality or durability in the
Josephson C705. Impressive, when
you consider that the C705 comes in
at $2550. This is not a budget mic, but
as an entry into the Josephson family
of sound and quality, it's almost half
the price of its next closest model, and
that's impressive.
