out-there and jazzed-up sessions with Todd
Rundgren,  David Johansen,  Sean Lennon  and  King Khan. On those sessions
I used four RCA 77-DX ribbon mics for
the horns, with gobos around everyone
because the entire band (save for the
drums and lead vocalist) were together in
the live room. Bernstein writes: " Hal was
rarely specific about rhythmic or harmonic ideas, but could be very specific about
a 'feeling', or another track that inspired
him. We discussed how I envisioned the
tracks (and keys), and we went from there.
I always left room in Hal's arrangements
for things to change-because they did.
Because I was writing for a horn section,
which is unlike a rock band session where
there's not necessarily a fixed axis to build
around, everyone had a chart (until we
start moving things) that had all the specific chords/breaks etc., that the musicians
needed to get the job done efficiently. "

The unexpected
Invariably, all the arrangers I asked
about working with Hal bring up the 'unexpected' factor: Steven recalls that, " Being
in a Hal session, there were surprises-
in this case, a fourth saxophone player I
wasn't expecting, a great musician, and
not a typical 'studio musician' who is used
to reading charts, So, we just massaged
that fourth saxophone in place and the chaos was as needed (Hal and I both loved the
Little Richard/Fats Domino multi-saxophone
sound). A typical Hal session is usually an
hour of running the piece, making the
changes that need to be made, and then
doing a few takes-everything recorded
live-background vocals, horns, band, all
in the room, three artists in a session. "

Why so serious?
Bernstein  also arranged the music for
the  Todd Rundgren  session with  Donald
Fagen. That particular song went through
so many iterations and versions that Hal
decided to add some string sweetening
later, done by Steven Weisberg. Steven recalls, " Hal was concerned that the version
they recorded was too goofy, so he asked
me how we could make it sound more serious. By using strings, I introduced a new
tonality to the track to make it more lush,
as well as using dissonances to stretch its
harmonies. " Those particular strings were
recorded live in the room, in a semicircle,
with two AKG 414 mics on the violins/
viola and a U 87 on the cello. "
