Have you worked with other loopers before?

It's funny-you could almost consider the
V-Synth to be vintage gear.
I love the V-Synth and use it on everything. It's one of the last
great synths that Roland ever made, I think.

Sometimes I feel that the better or easier the
technology gets, the more I miss wrestling
with it, if that makes sense.

It does make sense, and I agree with you. There has to be a certain
struggle sometimes. In a way, the things that fail with equipment are
sometimes the most interesting. I was doing something the other day,
and I was altering a control, and there was obviously loads of dust
inside it. It was causing this glitchy crackling sound, and it became
an essential part of the track, like old vinyl or something. Sometimes
the weakest part can turn into the strongest or most important aspect
of a track. For this reason, I love the frailty of the old gear as well.

How are you liking sequencing the System
700 with the BeatStep?

I'm still finding ways of working with it, to be honest. I'm still
very used to old-school sequencers. I used to have an Oberheim, and I still have a Doepfer Dark Time sequencer that's more
akin to what I used to work with, just a basic step sequencer.
I'm sure the BeatStep is probably easier, but I'm not fully on
top of it yet. I'm more into using the looper right now because
you can do a lot of crazy stuff with it. You can have patterns
running and manipulate them and put in various samples.

Yeah, I have a Line 6 M8 Stompbox modeler with a looper
in it that I use with the Prophet 5, and before that I used the
old green Line 6 DL4 delay modeler, which had a nice looper.
What I like about the Boss RC-505 is that you can work in
whatever way you want. You've got five channels, so you can
have one channel run in time with a sequence, you can have
another that runs through a certain number of bars and then
loops. You can have another channel that runs completely free
form, so it's possible to have all these interesting combinations. 

One of my favorite things on this album is the
reverb choices and even more so, the way you
use delays in the stereo field. It's dreamy and
even a touch disorientating at times. 

I've always used a lot of stereo delays, and it drives some people mad, actually. [laughs] I use a lot of ping-pong effects, usually
incorporated with reverb. Sometimes I'll effect the reverb inside the
software in real time. I'll change the reverb tail frequencies so it gets
twisted. It's very important to me to have a lot of movement in my
sounds. When I started off, I couldn't actually play the keyboard. So,
the controls on the synths became more important for me. Instead of
playing a hundred notes or scales, I would just play one note, but I
would make that one note have all these movements within it. That
one note would sound like it's doing something! One of my favorite
things to do now is to use a graphic EQ on a pad or reverb and
almost play it like a synth. It's kind of an extreme filter effect that I play
in real time and create interesting movements and polyrhythms with.

In Reason, you're automating the bands in
the EQ as the track plays? 

Yeah. There's a track on that album called Sketch 6, and it's
got quite a spacey dub feel to it. You can hear the graphic EQ
kind of scrolling through the reverbs and the synths if you listen.

Do you feel like you have a sonic signature?
What is the Richard Barbieri sound? 
People do say they recognize my sounds. Sometimes, when a
new keyboard comes out, and I go through the patches, I might
see my name on one of the patches, so people definitely have
their own idea of my sound. When I start playing something,
it'll usually be on the Prophet 5. There's a signature kind of pad
sound where I use noise modulation instead of frequency modulation-kind of a grainy, wobbly sort of sound.

I always thought you were doing that with a
super-fast LFO.

Part of it is, but it's mixed with noise modulation that makes it kind
of unstable. People might also recognize the cross-modulation that I
use on the Prophet for the more percussive, harmonically shiny type of
sounds used on Tin Drum. [Japan, 1981] It's actually very easy to do.

Regarding the movement, space and depth
on Under A Spell, did you do a lot of panning
and level automation in Reason?

There isn't any position automation going on. But you picked up
on something, in that most people think of the stereo spectrum as
right and left and how you fill that spectrum with the right frequencies and placements to keep the separation between instruments.
But there's also near and far. You can have a very dry sound,
and it might be centrally placed, but you can still manage to find
