Recording the band-this topic used to be a bit more cut and dried. Many
of us still think of a band as bass, drums, a couple of guitars, maybe a keyboard
and some singers. The words conjure images of everyone in the same
space, playing together, making tracks, and then tossing in a few well-placed
overdubs or fixes.
Of course, few bands have physically played live together anywhere-studio
or stage-in the past year. In fact, last year the monthly focus was on how musicians
and engineers were navigating remote, online collaboration. Now, as
the doors to our studios open again and musicians slowly gather, a different set
of questions emerges- what is a 'band' in today's world, and what instruments
does it play?
I started to mull over these questions as I spoke with engineer Brendan
Morawski. Originally, I intended to interview him and get some cool tips on
recording piano for Alicia Keys. Then, as we spoke he began to talk about
the modern studio band, where keyboards, MPC drum machines, analog synth
bass, and triggered loops from a computer jam alongside more traditional instruments
and vocals.
Then as Joe Albano and I were brainstorming a topic for this month's Inside the
Box column, Joe pointed out that it was now possible to track a band in the DAW
with no 'real' instruments at all if one so chooses, thanks to significant advances
in MIDI, virtual instruments and amp sims.
Finally, what if you were the band and played all the instruments and sang all
the vocals yourself, and you tracked it all to analog tape without undue computer
trickery? For just such a story, check out my interview with Wolfgang Van Halen,
who did just that for his new album Mammoth WVH.
Whichever road you choose, we have reviews to help tackle all of the
above. We have mics from Ocean Way and JZ Microphones. For our six-string
friends, we look at new products from Tech 21 and Overloud. We have a new
hardware synth from IK Multimedia, a groove box from Roland, and an updated
interface from Merging Technologies. Finally, we have virtual instruments
from UVI and EastWest. Our Family of Mics Compared column returns this
month as we look at eight microphones from the Audio-Technica 40 Series.
It was really fun to dig in and get reacquainted with these time-tested large
diaphragm classics.
In Part 8 of Marc Urselli's Session Log: The Making of AngelHeaded Hipster,
a T. Rex tribute album, Marc considers the importance of choosing the right
studio. Producer Mark Hornsby is back with more advice in his popular Inside
the Studio column. Marty Peters opens our ears to more Readers' Tracks, and
Aaron Trumm considers whether we even need to get together in person to make
music anymore.
