Drums
When recording drums and capturing
the whole kit with a single microphone,
the further away from the kit you are,
the more overall picture of the entire kit
you're going to get. As you get closer to
the kit, the mic will favor the closest element.
Two mics? Get the bass drum and
one overhead. Three mics? Get the bass
drum and stereo overheads. Four mics?
Add the snare. For this recording I used
one 2011 inside the bass drum and one
2011 as a mono overhead placed directly
above the snare drum.
Bass
For bass, I went direct while monitoring
through the UA Ampeg B15 plugin.
The distortion you hear on the track is
me overdriving the amp model while still
recording a clean DI track. (remember,
I was only monitoring through it). I used
my Fender 65 Deluxe reissue for the
electric guitars, with the 2011 off-axis
in front of the speaker and a couple of
inches out in front of the amp. The overdrive
on the solo is a little bit of the MXR
Sub Machine Octave Fuzz Pedal-a
personal favorite. On vocals, the microphone
is about six inches from the singer
with a pop filter. The processing after the
Neve 1073 model is the UAD 1176LN.
I put some FX on you
So that's two tracks of drums, bass, a
couple of guitar tracks, some keyboard
tracks and a vocal track. Now what?
The song is all about the vocal, so I
started with that. I made two aux tracks,
one for reverb and one for delay. For the
reverb, I used the UAD EMT 140, and
for the delay, I used the UAD Cooper
Time Cube. The EMT is on its default settings,
and the Cooper is set to the 'Splatter
Echo' preset. Once I heard the vocal
being fed into these two effects, I added
a FabFilter multiband compressor to
tame the aggressive high notes when the
singer digs in, and the FabFilter de-esser
to keep the esses from being too aggressive
in the FX return (esses tend to cut
like a knife in reverbs and delays).
