A Crash Course in Atmos

Lastly, you are going to need a lot of whiskey ...sorry, I mean
patience. The first time you set up a system like this, there will
be a lot of cussing and frustration. You might as well be proactive.
I suggest Jameson Black Barrel.
I've got everything set up.
How does this all work?
Pro Tools | Ultimate talks to the Dolby Renderer via the Dolby
Atmos Audio Bridge. The fastest way to start this process is to
select Dolby Audio Bridge as the playback engine in Pro Tools.
Then go into the Pro Tools I/O setup and assign the inputs and
outputs to talk to Dolby Renderer software. You are not going
to be routing your audio tracks from Pro Tools directly to your
speakers. The audio is routed from Pro Tools through the Dolby
software, then going through your audio interface to the speakers
(think ReWire... kind of).
Once this is set up and talking, you have two ways to manipulate/route
audio in the Atmos environment. These methods
are called Audio Beds and Objects.
Audio Beds are the channels-5.1, 7.1 etc. Think of them as
foundational parts of the Atmos environment that go to fixed
speakers. For example, let's say I want the snare drum to come
out of the center channel. You would route that to the 7.1.4 bed
and pan it accordingly in the Pro Tools surround mixer.
Objects are sounds that come from multiple channels. We
manipulate these in the Dolby Atmos Renderer environment. We
place the sound where we want it in the environment, and the software
decides which speakers should do the work to get it there.
For example, let's say I want the background vocals to be right behind
my left and right ears-whispering in my ears. We would visually
place these in the Dolby space, and the software might use
all four surrounds and two of the height speakers to get it there.
Outboard?
Okay, that's all well and good, but how do I put my Manley
Vari-Mu (mastering version) across my mix? Well, you can't.
Bus compression, as we typically know and love it, can't be
used in that manner. You can make multiple busses and apply

processing across each, but that's not comparing apples to apples.
The good news is, there is so much space in the Atmos
environment, it may be easier to make room for all your parts;
maybe you don't need all that tube-glue you thought you did.
Or, you could buy two dozen Vari-Mu boxes.
I love my mix. How do I print it?
Unlike a traditional stereo two mix, you print an Atmos mix
via the Dolby Renderer software - but you need the Mastering
version of that software to do it (wait, you wanted wheels on
that car?) An Atmos 'mix' in this example is the 7.1.4 bed and
all 128 channels. A single song can be a huge file.
How do I share it?
For right now, use Avid Play: Upload your mix and away you go.
And so...
That's a lot of information in a small amount of space, and
there is even more info out there. Crank up Google, but be
careful of everything you read... it's the internet, after all.
Rest assured, this format is taking off, and a lot of time and
money has been invested in it. You may not personally care for
it, but it's not going away. There are a lot of studios out there
investing in Atmos rigs. Granted, that doesn't mean they should
or that it's a good idea for them because it comes down to the
person behind the mix at the end of the day.
For me, I haven't been chasing the remixing bandwagon
when it comes to Atmos. However, I have been producing and
recording projects with the Atmos space in mind for the final
mix. For me, that's a lot of fun! Find what's fun for you and surround
