STUDIO UPGRADES
W
elcome to our second annual studio upgrade show and
tell! Last year we reached out to our editorial staff
and our regular contributors to learn about some of
their favorite and most beneficial studio upgrades. This year
we asked some of our good friends in the engineering
world, many of whom have been featured in our
pages (and some who soon will be), the following
question: what recent upgrade to your studio
has made the most significant impact on your
workflow? Enjoy their responses!

COVID 19 has changed everything in our business, but for me, the biggest
change has been working from home almost 99% of the time rather than out of a
professional studio. That meant making my listening environment better than just
okay. My space has some good things going for it, but it needed to be tamed
down, so I built some frames to accommodate 2 " Corning 703 and 705 (the
inexpensive secret weapon... Copy Ed.) insulation panels, then covered them
with fabric. It's unbelievable how the bottom end from my speakers came to life.

I've recently acquired a long-desired
pair of DPA 4006 microphones. They
exhibit beautiful clarity and musicality,
which is applicable for any style of music,
but the 4006 is especially excellent
for classical music. If that wasn't good
enough, I also obtained two 40mm
Acoustic Equalizer Pressure Balls. I initially
thought that these accessories were
gimmicky-until I tried them. They make
the omni pattern slightly more directional
while adding a bit of brightness. I find
that the DPA 4006 with this accessory
makes for an excellent instrument or vocal
spot mic.

I've made a couple of minor upgrades to my studio in the last year. One that has helped
me work faster and hopefully better is new acoustic treatment from GIK Acoustics. I installed
thirteen of their eight-inch-thick Mega Bass Traps to cover the front wall behind my speakers,
a ceiling cloud made from five of the Mega Bass Traps above my listening position, and four
of their Tri-Traps to fill in the corners of the front wall as well. This has really helped tame a
mean 100 Hz bump in the room's response and tightened up the sound in here quite a bit.
I got a bit crafty and installed LED strip lighting in between the panels in the ceiling cloud,
which added a bit of direct lighting over the gear as well.
