Part 11: Home Mixing in Home Studios
The
Fast and flexible
This degree of speed, flexibility,
mobility, and availability was never
a requirement in the past, but now
artists, managers, and labels expect
immediacy. Quality, versatility, and
portability are the most important
aspects of choosing equipment for a
home or even an on-the-go setup.
When discussing the mixing process
with Hal Willner's manager Rachel Fox,
she made it known that it would help
move the process along if I could get
started with mixes on my own at home
before meeting up with Hal in a studio.
Because Hal was busy with many projects,
it would have been a scheduling
nightmare to book him, the studio and
myself for every new mix we had to do.
In the September installment, I told the
story of when Hal Willner needed me
to put together a 'very very very good'
rough mix of the U2 song we had just
recorded a mere hour earlier so that
he could send it to the band. In the old
days, this would have required booking
a studio, spooling a tape, patching in
After some reluctance 15-20 years ago,
I chose to adapt to this way of working,
embrace it, and make it my own so that I
can be beyond comfortable and deliver
anything to anyone at any time.
The upside is that a degree of freedom
has come from this: I am the master
of my own time and travels, and time is
the ultimate currency in life!
Mixing or kitesurfing-
why not both?
For example, a few months ago I
mixed a new album by an Italian 70s
rock band called Noisebreakers while
on a surfing trip. Because I am fortunate
to have access to excellent tools
such as Audeze and Ollo headphones
and Stealth Sonics in-ears, I could mix
the entire album on them and then go
kitesurfing between mixing sessions. I
would return home, get their comments
via email, knock out a new mix revision,
and email it to them within a few hours.
They were super happy with the result
and couldn't believe that I was surfing
the whole week I was mixing.

I had a very decent rough mix
just a few hours later, and everyone was
very happy.
Modern expectations
I started making albums in an era
when mix automation was a luxury not
everyone had access to. The only way
to mix an album was to go to a studio,
get sounds, commit, and call it a day.
Today, the expectation is that you can
make unlimited changes and revisions
to everything; most people are afraid
of committing to anything and want to
leave all options open until the very end.

The moral of my story is this: learn your
tools and your craft inside and out. When
you master your tools and your craft, you
master your life. And when you master
your life, you are empowered with the
skills that afford you ultimate freedom
and riches in the form of time.
