French synth and software company
Arturia has recently updated its
popular FX Collection (reviewed
June 2020) with new mix bus and
modulation-type processors as well as
further enhancements. FX Collection 2 offers a comprehensive
selection of 22 frequently used tracking and mixing tools, that
Arturia claims once again, " you'll actually use. "
A look back
Let's start with a quick overview of the entire collection.
The FX Collection 2 offers multiple types of processors in each
category, making for a very well-rounded collection. There are
VCA, FET, and Tube compressors inspired by DBX (Comp VCA65),
UREI (Comp FET-76), and Gates (Comp TUBE-STA). Each
style offers different colors, characteristics and textural variety.
For delay, there is the bucket brigade-style Delay MEMORY-BRIGADE
(Electro-Harmonix Memory Man emulation) and
the tape-based Delay TAPE-201 (Roland Space Echo emulation).
The TAPE-201 has been updated with three preamp options:
off, original RE-201, and a new Germanium preamp.
There is also the stellar ETERNITY modern digital delay.
Reverbs include vintage plate and spring emulations. Rev
PLATE-140 is my go-to EMT 140 plugin. The Rev SPRING 636
has all of the quirky glory of the Grampian 636 spring reverb,
which is loved as much for its ability to be overdriven as for its
actual reverb. Rev INTENSITY is a great, flexible modern reverb.
There are three great-sounding preamps / EQs for tone shaping:
the Neve-style Pre 1973, the Trident-modeled Pre TridA, and
the German / EMI-inspired Pre V76. There is also a trio of Moog
and Oberheim-inspired filter sets, all of which sound great.
New in FX Collection 2
FX Collection 2 adds seven new effects; three mix bus and
four popular modulation effects. You also get in-app tutorials,
200 new presets with a refined preset browser window, and
now the FX Collection 2 is Native Instruments NKS ready.

Comp DIODE-609 is based on the justifiably revered Neve
33609C diode bridge-style compressor/limiter. The plugin version
has the same fixed attack and automatic recovery times of
the hardware unit but also has the enhanced ability to set those
values manually. The plugin works in dual mono, stereo, and
mid/side modes. There are options for analog-style VU or digital
metering. The latter gives a detailed view of the waveform,
gain change, and the attack and release envelopes.
Advanced Mode reveals a second panel with an extensive set
of controls for the sidechain. This includes a look-ahead function
for enhanced transient detection. A group of available filters can
effectively shape the internal side chain. There is also a control to
drive the diode bridge into harmonic distortion-I suggest you do!
Comp DIODE-609 rocks on guitar and drum busses. Even with
modest settings, they sound more present and full-bodied. The
tone remains smooth and buttery when using more aggressive
gain change and drive values. In sidechain mode, you can dial
in everything from subtle to full-on EDM-type ducking effects
May the FORCE be with you
Bus FORCE is a virtual rack of modules that can be blended
and balanced in parallel signal paths. The modules include
a Pultec-inspired EQ, an SEM-inspired filter set, a saturation
module inspired by the much-lauded Overstayer Saturator, and
you even get an in-house designed compressor.
There are three parallel output paths: Dry, Comp, and Sat,
that you can blend to achieve the desired effect. All in all, 36
available signal paths offer an incredible amount of flexibility.
While this may seem a bit daunting to grasp, in use the graphic
representation of each signal path helps everything make sense.
