Lars: Sven is very specific in his sound sets. It cannot be
harsh. It can't be piercing. It's gotta be warm-even the drums.
Are you working with drum machines or loops and
sequences in Live?
Sven: It's all Ableton Live. I have a lot of sample packs, and
sometimes I'll sample something off of YouTube.
Lars: He does mostly drag and drop samples building the
drums from the ground up, piece by piece. It's crazy.
So, you are building your own drum loops by hand?
Sven: Yeah, I have the kick and the snare on the grid, and
then I usually play the high-hats or a percussion part on a keyboard
to give the groove a bit more life.
Lars: And that's not on the grid. It stays loose. Then Sven
plays all of the instrument loops like live keys or guitar and
bass, and they are not quantized to the grid either.

Sven: It's a bedspring sample I ripped from YouTube.
What audio interface are you using?
Sven: In my studio, I have a Universal Audio Apollo 8.
Lars: I came up to Portland twice, and we rented an Airbnb
where we did like 70% of the tracking, and that was through an
Apogee Quartet. Vocal-wise, everything went through a Shure
SM7B with a Cloudlifter into a BAE 1073 mic pre. Everything
else went through these Warm Audio WA-412 four-channel microphone
preamps that I like. It's like an API clone but with a
different output transformer.

Sven: I used to use the AKG C414 on my voice, and when
Lars came along, I changed to the SM7B, which gives me a
nice warm vocal sound.
Lars: And because there's usually a laptop right in front of
Sven when he's tracking vocals, the SM7B does a better job of
rejecting the noise.
Do you do any EQ or compression on the way in?
Lars: No.
How do you track the bass and guitars?
Sven: It's just DI, and I have a couple of pedals that I go
through. The Zvex Instant Lo-Fi Junky is probably the most notorious
pedal that I use. It basically compresses the hell out of the
signal and brings in this LFO to kind of make it warbly. It also
rolls off the high end and creates this really warm bed.
Lars: He'll run keyboards through it, too, like his Roland Juno
106, or we used a Moog Voyager, and we would run it all
through the Lo-Fi Junky.
Sven: It also helps make digital sounds feel like a warm
analog thing.
Lars: We also used an EarthQuaker Devices Disaster Transport
SR pedal, and occasionally we would re-amp things back
through pedals as well.
