the rest of the time trying to talk me into how I was wrong because
he loves to debate. [everyone laughs]
Sven: I'm so annoying with that, it's true!
Lars: It wouldn't just be like OK, all right, fine. It was like, he
just can't understand how I could think that whatever part is
good or bad is good or bad.
Sven: I really appreciate that Lars does a really good job of
just going with the flow.
Was there any song on the album that was the hardest
to bring to fruition?
Sven: They all had their challenges. Most of the challenges
were in the mixing stage, just because, again, I'm very particular
and would change things last minute, which was frustrating.
I think maybe 'Get Down' was the hardest.
Lars: Was 'Get Down' the one we changed after the master
was turned in to the label?
Sven: Yeah. So, I changed a drum part after we had turned it
in, and it was inconsequential when I look back on it, but I was
determined to do it-not my proudest moment. [everyone laughs]
So, when you guys were mixing, and you wanted
to change something, you'd have to go back into
Ableton, do new edits and then resend that Ableton
session over to Lars?
Sven: Sometimes I would just send him individual tracks, and
sometimes I'd have to send him to the whole project again.
Lars: But it was all through streaming-I'd never send him
a mix and have him live with it. He would always hear a mix
before we printed it because we'd spend hours together mixing
with Audiomovers. Then we would print it, and he would live
with it. Then we'd come back to it, and he might have some
updated audio or notes for trying different things.
That's why having matched monitors helped, so you
guys were referencing the same sound?
Lars: Yeah, when Sven was listening, if he'd say the bass is
too this or too that, I would switch to the result6, and I could
instantly reference what he was talking about.
What was the easiest song?
Sven: Either 'Kenny', which didn't have many revisions, or
'That's Life'. We had already mixed the song 'Window' together,
but we hadn't ever written together. 'That's Life' was the first
try, and it was really easy and natural for us. That was when
we knew we could work together.
What advice would you give somebody today to get
their foot in the door and produce music?
Sven: I would just say to follow your gut and work hard more

than anything else. A lot of people want to do something, but
they really don't want to do what it takes to get there. I've put so
much time and energy into learning how to produce and play
instruments, but it's stuff that I love to do so it doesn't feel like
work to me. You've got to love it. Also, one thing that helped
me a lot was to take feedback from people. I play the music
for people and try to get their genuine reactions to things. At
the end of the day, I'm not making music just for myself. I have
to like it, obviously, but I want people to connect with it too at
the same time.
Lars, what advice do you have?
Lars: Just start doing it, whatever it is. I think some people,
when it comes to production, think, " Once I get this mic, once
I get this thing, this is really gonna make it work for me, " and
it's not that at all. It's just doing it over and over. Produce stuff
for other people, use what you have and never think that things
are out of reach because you don't have a certain piece of
gear. You have to be realistic about how it's going to sound,
but if it sounds cool, it sounds cool.
