I usually do not attend mastering sessions
myself unless the producer wants me there,
like in this case. Howie admits that, " Some
projects need that extra love... " and that
ultimately, he's all about making clients
happy-something we can all relate to.
Although AngelHeaded Hipster was
primarily mixed at one studio, with two
songs at another, it contains more than 25
tracks from different artists, genres, and
multiple tracking studios. When I asked
Howie if that presented a challenge, he
said, " Most definitely, but I was very fortunate
to have you mix and record the entire
album, and especially mix it in the same
studios. " I asked him whether anything
stood out about this album, and he replied,
" Nothing other than 25+ tracks that
really work together-incredible work! "
I was also interested in whether he
could hear a difference between AngelHeaded
Hipster, which was recorded
and mixed entirely through analog consoles
and gear, and the many all-digital
in-the-box productions he masters so often
these days. Howie's reaction was,
" Oh yes, totally! It's more about the
overall vibe... I started in the 80s when it
was only analog processing, now digital
has really caught up... " Then he added a
very important gem: " Just remember, it's
never about the equipment... although
the gear is important, skills always win! "
Since he mentioned the gear,
I had
to ask him about his normal mastering
process. " Nothing is normal! " he exclaimed.
" Generally, I like to approach
mastering with digital or analog processing,
or both, depending on how strong
the mixes are, and how much, or how
little processing I feel the mixes need in
order to be competitive. Less was more
on this, only because the mixes were
pretty much 'dead on' sounding. "
Howie was a pleasure to work with. He
gave us space to try things and, importantly,
to listen to things. His studio and equipment
are a state-of-the-art blend of analog
and digital chains. I was privileged to be
able to watch the master at work.
Above and beyond
There are many moving parts behind a
multi-artist record like this one, and while
mastering is the final step, it does not end
there. Before, during, and after the record
is finished, a team of people works in the
background to make sure that things actually
get done. In the case of Hal Willner,
the team was one person: Rachel Fox.
Rachel worked with Hal for so long
that she knew precisely what Hal wanted
and when. She was Hal's manager,
lawyer and right arm-talk about trust!

the five years it took to make this record
