roll off the low and high frequencies at
around 50 Hz and 4 kHz. L3 and H3
are labeled 'Room 2', with L3 giving a
slight boost at 50 Hz and H3 boosting
around 4 kHz and 8 kHz. When you
crave the rave, L4 is labeled 'Club Bass'
and offers a hearty 5dB boost in the 50
Hz range as well as 2dB to 3dB boost
at 200 Hz. H4 is labeled 'Bright Treble'
and provides a gentle 3dB to 4dB
shelf starting at 4 kHz and extending
to the highest frequencies. There's also
a handy, printed EQ chart below each
knob for visualizing each setting.
How do they sound?
Set to Club Bass and Bright Treble,
these things are just a lot of fun to listen
to. Sure, everything is certainly boosted,
but somehow not unnaturally over the top.
The lows were extremely punchy without
ever getting muddy or wooly, and the
highs never hit shrill or harsh frequencies.
I can see why this would be an excellent
box for DJs to crank up at home. Listening
to hip-hop and electronic music on these
settings is really enjoyable. I put on Billie
Eilish's 'bury a friend', a very bass-heavy
track, and I turned the monitors up way
louder than I usually listen to music. It put
a smile on my face and did offer a miniclub
/ concert-like experience. My neighbors
had a different reaction, I am sure.
Coming back down to earth, I returned
the frequencies to flat. This was more similar
to my usual studio monitors, which have
a 7 " bass driver. Comparatively, the VM80
had a slightly fuller low-end response,
which is not surprising seeing the woofer
is 1 " larger. Whether listing to projects
I produced and mixed or favorite songs
from other artists, the VM-80 monitors just
sounded darn good. They have a nice
wide soundstage with a smooth, crisp high
end and a full natural tonality with deep,
punchy lows. The versatility of the sound is
certainly the biggest selling point. I would
be just as comfortable mixing a record on
the VM-80 monitors as I would blasting
them on Club Bass at a party. I don't know
if I can say that about every pair of studio
monitors I have encountered.
Conclusion
The VM series is a big and bold entry
into the studio monitor market, and color
me impressed. They are reasonably
affordable at $289 each, with the VM-70
priced at $229 and the VM-50 priced
at $169. The VM-50 is also available in
an eye-catching white finish that makes
that brushed aluminum front panel pop. I
am a bit curious to hear what the smaller
models can do. The VM series is a solid
choice for DJs and producers looking for
powerful and flexible monitors. Whether
for the studio or planning your next club
outing, they deliver on both promises
with flying colors. I recommend checking
them out if you get the chance.
