Toontrack Fields of Rock SDX
on its own sounds almost too buzzy, yet
works magically in the mix. If that's not
your speed, the ultra-high and tight 10 "
snare is a great option.
up to 16 " , and there are three snares: a
1980s 14 " FerroManganese Sonor Phonic
D506, a deep 8x14 " 12-ply beech
Sonor Signature, and a small 12 " birch
Sonor S-Classix.
This kit is all about the toms. Rather
than thunderous, they are best described
as forward and lively, highlighted by
the stone-walled space. If you were
looking for a kit to channel your inner
Phil Collins, this is an excellent place to
start, especially once you engage the
corridor and talkback mics. If the Police
are more your jam, switch to the tight,
reggae-tinged 12 " snare and beefier
kick options.
When in Chrome
This set is a 1970s chrome-over-maple
Ludwig Rock Power Outfit with a 26 "
kick, 14 " Ludwig Coliseum Maple snare,
a single rack tom, and a large 18 " floor
tom. There's an optional 22 " birch Yamaha
9000 Recording Custom Kick, and
three additional 14 " snare choices: Q
Drum Gentleman's Copper snare, Ludwig
402 Supraphonic, and a Ludwig Super
Brass. This set was played on tour by
Scott Asheton with Iggy and the Stooges.
If you want a huge, fat, yet still natural-toned
set to anchor your mix, look no
further-think 1990s punk resurgence
with a hint of classic early 1970s hard
rock. Switching to the alternate kick offers
the classic 'heard more than felt'
sound, while the loose and brighter
snare adds more edge.

four toms ranging from 8 " to 16 " , and a
choice of three 14 " brass snares: 1930s

The sound is thick and rubbery yet
still warm and immediate. This set offers
some of the most unusual tom tones of
this or any drum library, and like the
Goth set, it pairs nicely with added reverb
and effects.

This SDX features a complete set of
Modern Studio
This 2020s Ludwig Classic Oak set
features two rack toms and two floor
toms, a 22 " kick and a 14 " 1990s
Noble & Cooley Solid
Shell Maple
snare. There is an extra 22 " Ludwig Oak
Custom kick and six extra 14 " snare
choices (Exclusive Drums, Repercussion
Drums, British Drum Company, Premier,
and two Ludwigs) in various depths,
materials, and tunings.
This is the jack-of-all-trades set, with
an outstanding balance of punch and
weight. The variety and vibe come
from the vintage-toned alternate kick
with no porthole and the six snare
options; my favorite is the ringy-pingy
1930s Ludwig Pioneer.

you get five Remo Roto-Toms, four
Pearl Rocket Toms, a kick drum laid on
its side with keys on the top, a struck
piano bench, bars from a window, a silverware
drawer and a step ladder.
This assemblage of items wonderfully
straddles the balance of weird and
unusual while still being musical and
usable. It's equal parts Tom Waits and
Mickey Hart.
Lost in the fields
In addition to the above, Mat Hector
Pure Goth
Now we move to the Stone Room in
the Coach House. The Pure Goth set
is a birch, seven-tom Sonor Sonorlite
kit made in the 1980s. Here it's tuned
medium to low, again with plenty of
damping. The kick is 22 " with an optional
22 " thin maple Sonor SQ2 kick
for variation. The toms range from 8 "

has served up some tasty grooves that
highlight each kit's capabilities and
scope. While most definitely a rock-focused
collection, Fields of Rock SDX
colors wonderfully outside the lines with
sounds and textures that can easily be
tailored to suit classic metal, progressive
rock, new-wave, grunge, punk, goth,
glam and more with a high level of inspiration
and versatility.
