emulate the analog warmth of specific classic hardware processors.
I like the broad, 'musical' EQ curves in plugins that model the
classic Neve 1073 EQ, as well as the added virtual tube warmth
found in Pultec EQP-1A and MEQ-5-style plugins. Many emulations
of these famous analog EQs are available; some can even
be found stock in Logic, Pro Tools, and other DAWs.
The big squeeze
Compression is a major part of the sound of recorded drums.

elcome back to Inside the Box! For our drum issue,
I thought it might be nice to talk about some of the
plugin processing often used on drums-or at least
some of the processing I typically use with drums...
Setting the tone
While many virtual drum instruments launch with processed and
EQ'd kits, raw drum recordings usually need a bit of tonal rebalancing.
Close-miked drums tend to have a somewhat midrangy
tonal quality; it's a common practice to cut those boxy frequencies
with a broad dip of a few dB at around 500-1500 Hz. A 3 kHz
presence boost for snare, and perhaps a little extra 50-100 Hz
low-end thump on the kick can also help. Most stock EQ plugins
in your DAW can get the job done, but I like character EQs that
It's not just a matter of basic dynamic control-drum compression
is often employed to pump up the drums for the larger-thanlife
sounds that we've grown accustomed to over the years. Compressor
attack and release settings can change the impact and
ring, potentially turning tight, dry hits into a big, booming drum
sounds. A fast attack (.5-2ms) and release (40-50ms) can clamp
down on the initial smack, relatively emphasizing the drum's
decay by letting it fully ring out. Compression can also take a
drum sound in the opposite direction; slower attack (>10-20ms)
and release times (hundreds of ms) can tighten up and 'unify' a
loose, soft drum kit sound. The slow attack adds snap by letting
the full transient come through, and when it does clamp down,
the drums get a tighter, snappier character.
The '1176' compressor type is famous for drum compression.
It imparts a big, boomy, aggressive drum sound thanks to the
inherently fast attack and release curves of the FET circuitry used
in the original hardware. This classic compressor is emulated by
Waves, UA, and Arturia among many others, and again, you will
probably find one built into your DAW (Logic Compressor is a hidden

Beyond vintage
While most emulations strive to match the look and controls of the
vintage models, some take a different approach, expanding the basic
emulations (in proprietary GUI) in order to offer broader utility.
For example, the stock compressor in Logic emulates half a dozen
classic hardware compressors by turn, using (mostly) the same set of
knobs. This allows the engineer to dial up a compression effect and
then switch models on the fly to hear how they react; you can often
get surprising results that veer from conventional formulas.
Transient shapers
Compressors are not the only plugin processors that can creatively
manipulate the attack and release characteristics of drum
recordings. Envelope-based 'transient shapers' let the user easily
