Welcome to the January 2022 issue of RECORDING Magazine! Our new year's resolution
is to help you make better drum recordings, whether they are miked, triggered,
looped or virtual. In this issue we have microphones, a tube preamp, studio monitors,
software, and a classic percussion controller to do just that and more. We have an
interview with one of the most iconic drummers of the last 40 years, Stewart Copeland,
and Mark Hornsby is back for year three of his Inside the Studio column, with a historic
Memphis studio gig that digs deep into some classic R&B session work. Joe Albano is
also back Inside the Box with a rundown of some of his favorite drum tricks and tools.
Making it a trifecta, Marc Urselli is with us as well for a
new season of Session Log, and drummer David Blascoe
takes us home with some studio tips for drummers.

Mike Rivers, 1943 - 2021
As we were wrapping this issue we received some
sad news; one of our longtime contributors, Mike Rivers,
passed away at age 78. Mike penned reviews and
articles in our pages for close to thirty years. His most
famous column was Oops, Wrong Button, which had
a five-year run from 1995 to 2000. Beyond our pages,
Mike was well known for his online blog, Useful Audio
Stuff (https://mikeriversaudio.wordpress.com/).
I knew Mike from our encounters at NAMM and AES shows over the years. Beyond
his knowledge and opinions, what I remember the most was his tan corduroy blazer!
Looking through our archives, I found a photo of Mike from the 1992 NAMM show. His
familiar white mane is still yet to come, but I'll be damned, there's that blazer.
Rest in peace, Mike!
And now another of our longtime contributors, Scott Dorsey, would like to say
a few words.
Mike Rivers was a student at the University of Florida and got interested in folk
music early on. He recorded hundreds of albums for Folkways, Folk-Legacy, Troubadour,
Flying Fish, and other labels. He ran sound for the Smithsonian, National,
and Lowell folklife festivals and his website used to say that he played old-time
music since 1960 and used to play with the Greasy Run Road Trompers, one of
the first of the string bands of the Great Folk Revival.
He worked for many years for the FAA in the Washington DC area, designing
systems for aircraft navigation, and at the same time ran a remote broadcast truck
under the name Gypsy Studio. He carried an Ampex MM1200 and a box of
splitters out to events all over the Mid-Atlantic.
I first met Mike at the Washington Folk Festival back in the 80s. I very soon saw
him online on net.audio in the early days of the internet when it was populated
mainly by government people and academics.
Mike was a good guy, knew his stuff, and I knew when I showed up on his stage
at the festival that everything would just work right.
He lived and worked through the great Folk Revival of the sixties and early seventies
and was one of the founding members of the Folklore Society of Greater
Washington in 1964. Sadly, I don't really know any of that history, but I wish I did.
He was just one of the friendliest, most agreeable, and most skilled people I
ever worked with, and his ability to keep the vibe going in a session was as impressive
as his engineering skills. We will not see his like again.
