Charlie uses a system he calls bricks.
Each brick is a section of six keys. Three
keys trigger the same sample, with
a nine-level round-robin adding subtle
variation. Flams, ruffs and rolls are
mapped on the half-steps. There is a
brick for each drum inside an instrument
group. For instance, there is a separate
brick for each of the toms. Also, if you
are using a large enough controller, you
can repeat the layout on both ends of
the keyboard for more comfortable lefthand
/ right-hand drumming. If you are
unsure of what sounds you need, there
is a handy ensemble preset to give you
a taste of everything spread out across
the keyboard.
Loops
There are 400 loops in Hammers,
divided into the same categories as the
instruments and using the same samples.
Tempos of 70, 90, 110, 130 and 150
BPM are available, with a +/- 10 BPM
variation inside each (sonic integrity is
well maintained using this system). Each
group contains completely different tempo-appropriate
rhythmic performances.
There is also a selection of alternate
tempo groups. Hammers can seamlessly
switch groups when your composition
varies its tempo (common in many action
sequences).
The loop section is also played using
the six-key brick layout. The first key
plays the entire eight-bar loop, while the
following four keys break the loop down
into four two-bar sections for playable
variations. The final key is an all-important
single end-strike. All of the loops are
available reversed, in a brick at the low
end of the keyboard.
Get warped
The final ingredient of Hammers is
called Warps. Warps are copies of the
400 initial loops but highly effected.
Each warp loop features twelve warp
sliders. A warp is a raw loop processed
by Charlie through his collection of effects
pedals, modular synths and more,
to add otherworldly filtered textures, industrial
drive, psychedelic delays and
circuit-bent goodness.
As warps are based on the same instruments
and loops, they blend perfectly in
time and playing style with the originals,
so even the most aggressively chaotic
rhythms still make musical sense.
If I had a hammer
Hammers is one of the most interesting
new takes I have seen in a
percussion sample pack, loop library
or drum-based VSTi in quite a while.
It sounds phenomenal, and even lo-fi
sounds maintain a high production value.
One sonic element to obsess over
would be the deep, room rattling low
tones of the toms and kicks that shook
the house even on my 6 " studio monitors.
I also quite liked the clanking metal
pipes. Finally, while different from
the norm, the workflow makes sense,
coming together in the easy-to-navigate
and organic way that Spitfire
